I have an 89 with the 2.8, it has 47000 miles and is otherwise bone stock, I was thinking about taking off the catalytic converter. Any thoughts? Does the engine need the back pressure that the cat provides? Or can I cut it out and just put in a piece of straight pipe? Many thanks for any input!

As you know it is illegal to defeat or remove emission control devises, so I for one do not recommend it. Not going to gain much in the way from performance by removing it anywy unless it is clogged restricting exhaust flow. With only 47k mile, it should be like new. Is the car in great shape?

Thanks, yes it is in unbelievable condition. I was just curious, I want to do a few things to increase the hp, but other then that keep it clean and running properly. It was a garage kept, little old lady owned car, not kidding.

Any suggestions on easy hp increases? I already put in a k&n air filter.

Its a 1989, there is pretty much nothing you can do to up the power. I don't think anyone sells any performance related for that motor and year.

Just change out spark plugs and wires and run an injector cleaner like seafoam through the car to bring back anything lost.

As for the cat, back pressure is a myth and if you want to cut it off go ahead but you won't notice anything from it other than a nice raw smell to the exhaust. The cats worth like 50-100 bucks at a recycle center too.
