    Hey everybody,

I own a 97 GT that is mechanically in good shape, but the body has seen better days. I came across a GTP with a good shell, no rust, lower miles, ect. Now I am assume something mechanically went bad in the GTP. I am still emailing the guy with the GTP and I don't have all the info on that car yet. Back to my point. I want to take my engine and trans from my GT and stick it into this GTP. First off you might be thinking "But the trans is the weaker 4T60" but I had that trans complete rebuilt a few years back and stands at 40,000 miles. The engine is still rock solid. Also the suspension in the GT is only a few months old. So that would be swapped over too.

But the body is damaged on the GT. After sideswiping a car, backing into my dad's 2500 chevy (story behind this one), and due to snow sliding into a ditch and also smacking into a tree and a fence yeah this body need very costly body work. Not include the rusted rockers, the cancer spot near the gas door, and all the fenders and bumpers being in sad shape. This GTP has a very mint looking shell. I would rate it at a 9.3 out of 10.

But I am curious to see if the 4T65 trans in the GTP is any good. I'll find out, but if I were to take my L36 engine and attach it to the 4T65 would I keep my GT ECU or GTP ECU or go pull a ECU from a 98 GT? I just don't want to do any wire cutting, adding, ect. I know the 97 GTP trans was the non HD that ended up in the 98 and above GTs. I just want to make sure everything is compatible and that codes will go off when they really need too.

Reason why I am not going for the performance route is because I want to give this my to fiance so she can have a rock solid car for work and school. She has a p.o.s. 94 integra with the a/c line ripped out with 200,000 miles. And if she gets into a crash of any sort I know the Grand Prix can take a beating and keep going or at least keep her safe.

    I appreciate any help/advice.

    Thank you

    Joe

The 97 GTP trans is a HD. All GTP transmissions from 97-02 are the same and HD with 2.93 gearing.

You cant use the 4T60 with the GTP motor, because the trans is vacuum operated. Nor would the PCM know whats going on.

If you used the L36 motor with the GTP trans it can work. You would have to use the top end of the sc car and plop it over the L36 block. But with doing that you would have a high compression supercharged car and you need a few mods to run it that way (like headers, custom tune is prefered)

I guess you are still waiting on info from the seller as to whats wrong with the GTP car, so its hard to say what you are going to have to do.

i think the easiest way would be to just put the GT's long block into the gtp, then top swap that motor... although you may have to get the ecu retuned due to the different compression ratio, and i dont the the GT's ECU is even compatible with that 4T60 trans

Either way you can easily do this with programming. And as for the 60 in the gtp.. you can make an easy adapter to go from the 12 wire to 7 wire connectors. No cutting of the actual harness.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

I'm not looking to do any compression changes, I won't be using the GTP motor or super charger, nothing to boost performance. I am putting a GT engine in a GTP body. So would that make it impossible to use the 4T65 trans? Or could I use the ecu from a 98 GT? Or would I be better off just using the GT engine, trans, wiring with the GTP body? I

just use the GT engine and trans. My guess it that the 4t65 is in a weaker condition then the 4t60 is now after the rebuild. Keep it nice and easy and use everything from the GT.

I'm pretty sure I've heard Bill say that the 4t60 trans is as strong as the non HD 4t65e, but it produces more heat and thats why things break when more power is added.
