I have a 1998 GTP, with the service engine light. I had the light checked out, and code P0440 came up:
Aa1. –Defective or loose fuel cap
Aa2. EVAP canister or hose cracked, not connected
Aa3. Purge or vent solenoid defective
    Aa4. Vacuum leak at engine

We can rule out the defective gas cap, because a couple days later, the engine started making almost like an exhaust leak sound when you hit the gas pedal. I'm not familiar with what those other definitions above are. Can anybody tell me what I should look at first? Thanks!

An exhaust type of sound would be unrelated in most cases. Unless it's a vacuum sound you hear.

I'd check all the items on that list. They are the most common causes.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I took it into an auto shop, and there was an exhaust leak under the hood, unrelated to the engine code. The mechanic wasn't certain what was causing the code, but they did notice the intake gasket was leaking (103k miles). So I need to replace the gaskets. Other than that, his only guess was the air flow meter and sensor being dirty could cause the code. So I'll take care of that when I attempt the gaskets.

I have 2001 GTP 120K. Just got two codes this morning heading to work. P0440 and P0404. It seems the codes is referring to the EGR valve? Should I try gumout or Seafoam?

My GT has thrown the EGR code a few times as well. Wanna know what I did to fix it? Absolutely nothing. I just reset the code. Hasn't come on in almost 2 years now.

Just try resetting the code. Couldn't hurt anything. If it comes back on, then sure, go ahead and replace the EGR valve.
