So I have ordered parts to make my own CAI and have been doing research an ddont know if it was smart to order. I see a lot of places that CAI's can decrease gas mileage because more dense air = more fuel to the engine to keep the fuel to air ratio constant. Others have said it will increase gas mileage because you will get better output at lower rpms. Also, does a CAI in the winter give you worse gas mileage than a stock setup in the winter? I dont know which to believe. Please help

the gas mileage gain or loss is negligible. the place you'll notice it is that your foot will be in the gas more because you can hear the motor.

so basically when people say they are losing 2-3 mpg its just because theyre a little more heavy on the pedal? damn people dont know how to get accurate results.

If i do a DIY CAI with a good filter though (or even an average filter for that matter) the setup itself wont lose me a significant amount of mpgs? Im sure theres some flaws with DIY CAI's.

if youre modding your car and worried about MPG then you are doing it wrong.

    This.

    Fast, Cheap, or Reliable.

    Pick 2.

because you can't have all 3, ever.

I have seen no improvements nor decreases in MPG since I put on the intake on my GTP and SSEi. Of course I play with both cars regularly so I don't really worry about MPG But the fuel mileage meters on both stayed the same since I got them and put on the intakes... now further modding will change mpg but don't worry about the intake.

If your modding then do it... if its just a stock DD then leave it be and get a good quality filter.

Putting a free-er flowing filter on will help to slightly lean out the AFR. If you see a difference, though, it might be 1 mpg, either way.
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.

In 1988, we would flip the air cleaner lid upside down on a 1980 GMC 3/4 ton w/350 & 4 barrel quadrajet. It gave us about 1 inch of a CAI and made the truck sound really cool. Ah, high school days.

boy do i miss the good old quadra bog days lol they had these little primary's and huge ass secondary's, flip the air filter lid and they would just scream when you floored it lol i can imitate the sound pretty good too lol

my old 77 gmc, if you held it floored for a long time the gas gauge would drop right in front of your eyes.

fuel would just be pouring into that carb when you looked inside it and revved it up. but gas was a dollar a gallon back then, so who cared.

my 77 was a camper special 25, all heavy duty 2 wheel drive, with 3 speed and the creeper low gear, that truck had no rights on the highway, it just drank gas, iirc the tack would be 2700 rpm, at 55 mph and it screamed, i had 2 foot pipes off headers with turbo mufflers and no tail pipes, talk about loud!

    ****, I remember .84 cent gas...and I'm not even that old.

    Granted when I started driving...still it was a buck and a half...I remember 2 dollar a gallon gas...then 3 then 4 bucks...right after I got the GTP. $4.79 a gallon for 91. Can I get a bucket full of fail?

When I graduated in 1995 (yeah I know I'm old) gas was $0.95 per gallon could fill my bike up for less than $4.00. Boy the good ole days are gone it's ashame we let oil companies rape us.....

HAI will help with city fuel economy, since the air won't be as dense.

On the freeway, its going to get cold regardless, and the flow might help you out.

    Depends on its setup.
