I tried painting my diagonal braces today, and I wasn't too sure where to start. I put primer on and let that dry, then I tried to actually spray paint them and all it did was just run down the sides and didn't stick. Do I need to sand off the black stock paint first?

You always need to prep before you paint.

Grease and dirt and oil dont allow the paint to stick. Clean them, then scuff them up really good and hit them with the primer, let it dry and then paint.
