I took a good amount of time on the both sets that I did and they turned out good. I think if you take your time and do it right they will be fine. I used to work with a kid that got pulled over for his and asked how he tinted them and he said that he put on like 5 coats of VHT and did not wetsand or use clearcoats. They just looked like someone had taken a flat black spray paint to them. They had very poor output too. So don't do that. lol

Would a normal tint shop do a good job? And how dark

I cannot vouch for what you should do with the headlights but for the tails if you use VHT do a light coat and then a second coat and that should be plenty of VHT. Itll be enough to notice but it wont be overdone. I just followed a write-up on here about how to do it and I think it involved wetsanding between each coat and then applying multiple coats of clear and wetsanding I believe.

Not sure what a tint shop would do but they would probably work with you and get an idea of what you are going for.

as dark as you want...best way for them to be done is to mix a few drops of black paint in with a cup of clear..thats the best look.

Best bet is to order tint vinyl wrap.

    Headlight Tint

I had them send me two samples of the light and dark tint. That would be the better way to do the lights. Easy to do as well!!

they mix it, not you. They will use a spray gun, so better to go to an actual body shop. Not a tint shop.

One of the best write-ups I have found. Good pictures, solid info, and says what products he used for the results. This is how I plan to do it when spring time comes.

How To: Apply VHT Night-Shades Spray Tint - Chevrolet Colorado & GMC Canyon Forum

Altho I will probably make my own full write-up so we don't have to link to other forums for the info lol.

I'm gonna have my headlights tinted professionally at a local body shop. But before I tint them I want to upgrade the lights with some good HID's. What's the best and easiest way to do this. And I don't have an oven to bake my headlights in.
