When i first got my car the tint on it was crap from someone applying low quality tint the wrong way.(always get your tint applied by a professional with a warrantee) Anyway so i want to get new tint put on but first the old tint has to be removed and the guys quoted me 220 to tint all windows cept front. But in order for him to remove the tint he was going to charge me a couple hundred more and now that ive done it i can see why. Well to ease your troubles in doing this here is a little guide.
Few things your going to need
Windex and/or amonia
Razer blade
trash bags
news paper
and i found microfiber rags very useful
First thing you need to do is get all that old tint and glue lose enough so you can peel it off. What i did was sprayed down each window and put a thrash bag over it so the tint could soak in windex for 30 mins - an hour. Ive heard that pure amonia works the best but all i had was windex at the time and it worked since it has amonia in it.
After letting the windex soak into the tint your going to want to take your time and do 1 window at a time i started with the fronts cus those are the easiest. Your going to want to cut a little slit in the top of your tint down so you can get your razer behind it to get something to pull onto. Once i had a little peice to pull on i slowly started to pull the tint down while spraying windex to the back side of the tint to loosen the glue a little more.
After you get all the tint off there is going to be excess glue that needs to come off. This is where the razor blade really comes in hand. Your going to spray down the entire window with windex and using and up and down movement with the blade being careful not to accidently scratch your window with the edges. This will get all that old glue off and then just wipe it down with news paper/paper towels/ or a microfiber cloth. untill its spotless.
Repeat this for all the door windows.
Now comes the hard part the forsaken back window.All you have to do is take a big rock and accidently drop it on your window and call your insurance company and wala tint is gone jk jk
Do not use your razer blade here cus you will end up cutting your defogger lines.What you have to do is the same as above using the trash bag method. But to make thing a little easier and i have to find this out the hard way cus i could not reach all the tint in the tight corners, Remove the rear window carpet. On an 04+ all you have to do is drop your rear seats the remove the 4 10 mm bolts in the plastic peice. Then there will be 1 plastic plug holding in the carpet on each side under the left and right seatbelts on top. All i did was put in a pair of needle nose plyers and twisted them untill they popped and they didnt break nor did i care if they did cus they are useless anyway.Then you just pull the carpet up carefull not to bend the cardboard to much and it should come out pretty easily.
Now that you have this out of the way You should probly cover your electronics with a trash bag or something cus your going to be spraying the window alot with windex. I just soaked the excess glue and actually i was at my shop so i got a brilliant idea to speed things up a bit to take the window cleaner squeegy and use the scrub part to just scrub all the glue away and it worked great to get to the easy spots. Then i just used the microfiber cloth to get the rest.
Its a time consuming and tiring project but can be done without having to pay the extra money to have a professional do it.
I have heard of people using steam cleaners to get it off but i have not tried this so i dont know but you could give it a shot.
