anybody got a good way to remove rust from chrome rims?i was thinking like a fine steel wool, but not sure if it will scratch the crap out of them. the rust is heavy in some places, mostly on the backside of the rims. any input would be helpful.

Just two days ago, I went thru a 2liter of Coca-cola taking the rust off one very corroded rim. I don't have any before pictures, but even in 35 degree weather it worked wonders... I know this is posted on many different sites and some people don't believe it and Mythbusters has 'proven' that this myth was.. but all I have to say is for me.. IT WORKED
.
What you need:
- COLA (preferably Coca-cola but I after I ran out.. I had some cans of Pepsi and it worked too)
- Aluminum Foil
- Elbow Grease
- Time
To begin All I did was take some paper towels and dunked a piece in a cup of Coke and wrapped each spoke. I then lined the outer walls with a small sheet as well as put a crumpled piece into all the 'hard to get' corners.
(This is obviously done better in 2-steps **Gravity!**, maybe even 5 if your not impatient like myself)
Now wait. The longer, the better. The first area I tried I couldnt wait to get to it after 10 minutes and with some elbow grease, it still worked. The next time I waited ~30-40 minutes and it was coming off pretty darn easy.
Anyways, take a large piece of aluminum foil and fold it up a 3-4 times times to about the size of your hand with the SHINY SIDE UP every time (as if rolling it). What I did was pre-crinkle/mat down it to get out any flakes that could cause a scratch.
Now dunk the foil in the cola and pre-soak the rim as if you were wet sanding.. the 'more', the better but don't waste it if not necessary.. and begin scrubbing the rim parallel to the main surface. You'll find your own way most likely, but this what I found work best.
After awhile, you'll notice a mud-like substance begin to form (this is the rust!) If you'd like to get excited, wipe it clean with a paper towel and begin to see the progress. Continue to do this until your happy with the results.
For the corners you'll see the angle gets tricky and in the cold my fingers were killing me but I was too excited to wait until warmer weather.
I hope this helps! It's a scary thing to think you can drink this but shockingly it worked to my disbelief

0000 wont scratch it, also if you get fine scratches just use some polishing compound and buff it hard and the scratches will disappear.

Ya I ended up downloading the episode and you're right, it is a fact it works on chrome but not as well on an alloy metal.
And for the fine steelwool.. I tried that but its not abrasive enough for me at least to get the results I want.

does the coke method do anything for pitted chrome? the rust is pretty thick in spots, not sure if its pitted or not. just wondered if it worked regardless. i tried using dish soap and that worked pretty good for removing the light rust. i just let it sit for about half an hour and scrubbed it with a stiff cleaning brush. really dont want to have to sandblast them and remove the chrome but if i have to do that im just going to repaint them black.

are you guys serious? the stock rims are not chrome, they are polished and clear coated. if you even touch them with anything besides wax or a mild polish youll screw them up.

im not asking about my grand prix rims. i know they are not chrome. i have other rims i am asking about.

I highly recommend Flitz polish. It's a cleaner applied by hand that comes in a blue paste or a thick, green liquid (not sure of the difference... but both work great) and it will remove stains and oxidation from any wheel, whether painted, polished, or chromed. It can be kind of hard to find though; I had to go to a local Toys For Trucks dealer (they sell truck accessories) and get it. Otherwise, check the net for retailers. I swear by it!

Steel wool is your friend. AND it wont scratch your stock rims. I use it to remove the brown rust on paint and on windows just make sure to have it lubricated such as with polish or even water.
