Thread: New Struts question

my struts are WAY past it on my car. I can't accelerate without them squeaking horribly. especially the back. I've read every strut thread that I could find and I still have a couple questions. 04 gt2 with 138,xxx. running stock for winter and 19' tenzos for summer.

1. do I go with a quick strut or do I just get the single strut and transfer all the hardware over.

2. also while I have everything apart I'm thinking about lowering it with ssc. and from what I heard it might just be easier to take it to a shop for them to get the springs on other than trying to tackle it myself.

If you have an air impact available, and normal tools, I'd just rent a spring compressor and do them yourself if your going to put lowering springs on it.It's not too bad of a job, also, I've got ssc springs and like them alot.

do you live up north with snow?

No, lol.But when it does snow my lowered gp stays indoors and my factory hight one does the snow...and still hits snowchunks.

ugh yea... thats my only worry about lowering it. but yea I have impact/air so I should be able to handle that...

also what is the difference between eco and normal

Like gold said, if you are going to do lowering springs anyway don't get quick struts, just get new struts and new strut mounts.

I live "up north" and have a lowered Stealth on coilovers and drove it in lots of winters. The only time I ever had an issue was when I had shot tires and it snowed all day while I was at work and we got over a foot of snow. I was literally plowing snow with my rear bumper to get out of my parking spot.

This pic is a little on the dark side, but it gives you an idea of how low it sits, and again, no issues with winter driving 99% of the time.

Don't know, usually economy struts are usable, but considered under oem quality as far as performance or longevity.

IIRC Monroe quick struts didn't last long with lowering springs. Obviously your strut life is shorten when you lower it but IIRC since the Monroe are geared more toward comfort paired with lowering springs they just don't last long.

A better choice would be kyb/gr2. Replace strut mounts with Monroe. Reuse your stock hardware as long as there still in good condition. Upgrade to springs of your choice. A decent impact and coil spring compressor and some time is all you need to do the swap yourself.

Now I will say that I've got gr2 struts and there a little too bouncy with the ssc springs.Wish they were firmer.

or what i might end up doing is getting the quick strut and just putting the lowering springs on next spring. it would be an easy xmas present since I'm kinda on a cash crunch right now. By my calculations it ending up around 525. any idea how much spring rentals are?

You mean spring compressor rental? It costs you nothing technically. You have to pay a fee when you take them, then you get your money back when you return them.

ahh gotcha. sorry for all the questions but I have another... what all needs to be transferred over if I don't get the quick strut.

I put Moog spring/strut assemblies on the 98 GT sedan and it brought back the stock ride. I was expecting them to be a little stiffer, but they are good overall for the price. If you want to do structs only, I have used this Harbor Freight Spring Compressor with no issues. You should also replace the strut mounts. For a few $ more it's just easier to replace the whole assembly and get new springs in the process.

So you're talking about getting quick struts and then just putting lowering Springs on them after the fact
