Bumpstops inside the coil spring once assembled!? Is it really that simple to prevent people from bottoming out and blowing the struts? Sure it will be harsh if the car slams into the bump stop but at the very least it should extend the life of the strut and prevent the strut from taking a beating directly!
I had a bumpstops in my fronts. I used freeze plugs and enlarged the hole big enough until it fit over the strut rod. LOLOL Fit right inside my QA1 springs just fine.
freeze plugs? HUH? No watch the vid im talking about the rubber bump stop inside the coil spring at the top of the assembled coilovers toward the end of the video.
Yea..I used freeze plugs. I know what you're talking about. I built my coilovers. I made bumpstops for like 4 dollars.
I stopped using the isolators after they ripped again. No noise or squeeks.
Really! That's surprising. figured you'd get some creaking or something with the spring shifting around during driving.
Wrong isolator. He's talking the one for the spring.
Also it's the strut rod slamming the bottom of the strut body that kills them, not the strut body hitting the top. What do you think the bump stops hit? The strut body.
Nah I went back to factory 2.5 bottoms which fit inside the coil springs very snugly. I slapped a lot of chassis grease up there.
FYI..the strut come no where close to slamming into anything. I'm not slammed. I roll on where I left off with SSC ride height except with more strut travel. Isolators are the red piece on the top plate...I think your referring too the bump stop
Someone else did too he used progressive spring setup instead of the linear like I did.
might be I don't remember who had them. Those are inverted and have the beefiest strut rod so seems to make sense they are the best option. But Im still surprised one else has came across some other struts to use for DIY coilovers.
Who knows if this is helpful or not, but a while ago I had done some research on different struts looking for possible matches. I cant exactly remember where I got the info from, but I took a few measurements and I think these cars all had good lengths to work with and maybe even compatible bottom mounts or close to being compatible.
3in from center to center between the mounting holes in the front and 3.5 inches center to center for the rears. The space between the mounting tabs needs to be 1.5 inches.
So far I think some options could be 90-94 eclipse, 95-99 neon, and 00-03 maxima coilovers for the front and 93-01 impreza, 94-99 celica, 92-95 mx-3, or 07-11 camry for the rears.
