Ok so I'm replacing one of the brake lines on my car, and the old one has this braided piece on it.

Does this need to be on the car? I was just going to replace the whole line in one piece with some new steel line if it doesnt need to be there.

It is not required. It's there to make things easier. Like letting the master or ABS move to get to the orifice tube of the AC system.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
