    2004 Grand Prix GT 3800 Series 3 (Daughter's car)

    Going to replace the rear brake pads soon. Do I need torx sockets to change these brakes? Or any unusual tools to make the job easier? Is the emergency brake an issue when changing the rear pads? Is the hardware kit recommended? Any advice to make things go smooth is welcome and appreciated.

    Most good brake pads with come with the little metal tabs that sit in the caliper bracket. On the 2004, I am pretty sure due to the integrated ebrake, you need the tool to turn the piston back into the caliper. The tool is commonly a cube with many different pin combinations that you can find at the parts store. Or you could also rent the free loaner from the parts store and do the job for a

    Chuck...here you have to "rent" the free loaner tool. When you return it.. you get the money back. Their words, not mine.

    Now...go write a book about how to assemble our engines properly for the guy I sent your way.

    So, I take it that trying to use needle-nose pliers to turn in the piston would not be possible?

    I think I have done it that way before. The resulting blood blisters weren't worth the effort it took to pick up the free loaner tool though.

    yes, you can go that route as well.

    they call it a rental, but its really a deposit you leave for the tool, and get a full refund when you return the tool. works for me.
