I have a 99 Grand Prix GT. For the past few months it has been making a clicking noise only when steering to the right. I have unfortunately replaced the axle and the wheel bearing only to get in and drive to the right and hear the noise. I noticed some vibration during the last few drives and something made me get out and pull on the passenger tire to see if it was loose. It has a little bit of play in it and while the hood was popped, I noticed the top of the strut moving. Is this possible to fix without replacing the whole strut or does it all need replaced. I think this may be the solution since I read on another forum that someone with the same car and same noise had to get their strut fixed but they were vague as to what was fixed/replaced. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

So you replaced the parts on the left side?

Because normally its always going to be on the opposite of the way you are turning.

the center bolt part with 3 bolts around it part under the hood, is the strut mount, yes you need to remove the strut, but thats easy 3 bolts up top there, and the 2 lower bolts.

to change the strut mount you need to compress the spring, get the big bolt off up top, air tools help a lot.

or do what i did, the safe way. remove both struts, take them to a front end shop with new mounts in hand and ask them to change them. i was charged 25 bucks to swap both mounts.

do ask around before hand to find a shop that will do it and also for a fair price. they have all the right tools and it will be done right and most of all your safe, if the spring lets go, your in for some hurting if it hits you.

fivefingerdeathpunch: No I only replaced the parts on the right side but it is the right strut that moves when I pull on the tire.

scottydogs: So you think only the mount needs replaced and not the whole strut or something such as the strut bearings etc?

pop your hood, and stand outside the door, (with the car running) and rock the steering wheel back and fourth, if you see the center bolt moving all over, the mount is shot, change both, if one is shot, the other is right behind it.

I know it has taken a while but finally this weekend I replaced the struts. It has not solved anything so I'm back to square one. When I had it at the mechanic, he was able to produce the sound by holding the brake and revving the engine and letting the car move forward slowly. I'm still not noticing any changes in how the car handles but I do not have to steer as much in order for it to start clicking. Any other ideas?

Ok, from what I have read. You replaced the struts? What about the strut Mounts? The mounts can get worn out causing excessive play and therefore making noise. When I lowered my car I did not tighten the strut nut enough and it made a popping noise until I put an impact on it and tightend it fully. So what I am asking is did you replace this SM5394 KYB Shock/Strut Mount - Rear (Either Side) for 97-03 Pontiac Grand_Prix at Andy's Auto Sport

    or just the strut itself?

I replaced the whole thing with a quick strut. I didn't feel like playing around with this part or that being bad. By the time I bought just a strut and mount it was more than buying the whole quick strut.
