I just recently purchased all new front control arms (to replace the stock bushings) and a solid front sway bar to replace my GMPP front sway. This seemed like a good time to swap out for the lighter subframe. I read about the 2000 subframes cracking, and to only buy an '01 up aluminum. I ended up picking one up from the junkyard for $35 out of an '05 Impala. I grabbed all the bolts and the cups that go on the top and bottom.

My question is this...am I at risk for breaking the aluminum subframe under heavy acceleration? I'm only a 3.4 swapped GTP, but I plan on going turbo at some point. I've seem some pictures of air-to-air intercoolers with aluminum subframes in the background, and just wondered.

it depends on how hard the boost hits, which mounts you have, the whole setup. I've seen a couple crack and I've seen most stay together.

Ask yourself though. Is the weight difference worth the potentially weaker subframe?

What I would automatically suggest if you plan on doing the frame is to get the aluminum oil pan and it's pickup tube. That pan makes changing the mount or pan gaskets super easy. And it's structural so you won't ever dent it.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

In a full weight car, every little bit helps. I also have a personal vendetta against rust, so eliminating the steel subframe is eliminating one more rusting part from my car.

I guess I'll have to keep an eye on the subframe and check it every oil change for cracks. or bends. Are there any indications of a crack other than visual? With my access to a lift so readily available, I'm not shy about giving the aluminum subframe a try. I will definitely not get rid of my stocker, just incase I need to put it back in.

2000+ Impalas and Monte Carlos had them, but the 2000 models had manufacturing problems, so look for a 2001+ model.

I don't want to have to hassle with shipping something so large. I'm gonna try some pick and pulls around here. Thanks though
