Low Brake Fluid??

Hey ya'll,

I've got a 2006 Grand Prix, and on the way in to work this morning (just on my normal drive, nothing out of the ordinary) I get a warning message saying my brake fluid is low. The parking brake light is on as well, but I read it's the same light used for both situations.

I pulled over and checked the fluid level and it seems like its at a good spot. My manual was saying that it should only be low if there's a leak or if its time to replace my brakes.

I guess the question is, is this a serious issue? Am I safe to drive it like 15-20 miles home??

if you arent loosing any fluid it could just be a bad sensor. if are loosing fluid then you need to find where its loosing fluid and it fix it right away.

when was the last time you did brakes?

Can't be too sure, got the car in Jan 2010 and haven't done any brake work on it yet.

the fluid will go down a little bit as your pads wear down, if it was a little low to start with then it could be low enough to set the like off. there is a max and min line on the resivoir, id start by looking for leaks on the lines and at the master cylender, also make sure your pads arent too low. if they were new in jan '10 its likely that you need to do them by now.

I would guess you need to change your brakes. As your brake pads wear, you brake calipers need to push out further to contact the rotors. So they use more fluid and level gets a little low. If you are driving hard, braking hard, or on hills, it can set off the low brake fluid light that you saw, and display the brake warning light. As long as there is fluid in there, you should be okay to drive, but make sure you check things over ASAP.
