Hello all. New here this is my first post. I have a 05 GT. I am looking to do a few things and had a few questions. This weekend I plan on rebuilding some of the suspension parts on the car. The roads are rough around where I live.
I have noticed over some time now the car is making some mild clunking noises and is not riding or driving the way it use to. I can’t seem to find a whole lot wrong so I am going to replace bearing tower and top strut mounts all the way around, along with ball joints, tie rods, and sway bar bushings. I notice the tires are not wearing good so I just thought if I need to get a alignment that I might as well replace a few things. My problem is that the ball joints and tie rods tested fine. So when are other people seeing them go bad. Anything else I should replace or look for on the suspension for common problems. The car is at 68,000. Thanks

Look at the busing where the control arm bolts to the sub frame those will make a clunk.

Thanks for the tip. I did check those and they look ok. I really don't want to waste money on ball joints and tie rods. Trying to see when other people are replacing theres.

When they have movement in them is when they need to be replaced.

I have an 05 GT too. Had to replace struts at 70K miles. Suspension was getting floaty noticeable on bad roads. So if you need to chase strut mounts or other work requiring you to pull the struts, think about replacing them.
My 98 GP went over 100K miles and didn't need struts, also a rear bearing went bad around 40K miles on the 05. So Pontiac definitely started cheaping out.

started in on the car and looks like I wil be needing some struts. I can beleave they need to be replaced so soon. seems like they would last longer. What is a good strut to go with. I want somthing that just as good or better that came on the car. I have seen a few people like the kyb gr2? I am not sure what I will be able to find at part store, as I need them tomorrow so I can get this wrapped up and done with. Some help with this would be great. Thanks

    KYB GR-2 or monroe sensatrac.

If you go monroe just get the quick strut.

I went with KYB GR2s. Wanted Bilsteins but they are much more expensive. Delcos are also more dollars but didn't see the point of using them. Really would have gotten the AGXs for their adjustability but they are not made for the 05s. The GR2s are a good stock replacement. Wish they were tighter for sportier handling but they do the job (I have another high performance car so I was willing to compromise on the GP). Heard KYBs are higher quality than Monroes so I got the GR2s from Rockauto. But if you got to go with what is in stock locally, then you don't have much choice. Also the KYB GR2s only come in the quick strut for the rears. Let us know how you make out.

I can only get the kyb not the gr2. hope they ride and handle ok. Can't find the gr2 in stock. My other choice was monroe sensatrac but I have used them before and did not care for them. I could have also got gabriel ultras but know much about them. kyb are $210 out the door, monroe sensatrac $330 , and the gabriels where $295. It would be nice if I had more time to get the gr2. When I got the front strut apart I could push it down with my pinky and it took 20sec. for it to come up half way then stoped and I had to pull it up the rest of the way. can't beleave they are this bad with only 60,000 miles. There is not enough time for me to order any, I need to get the wifes car done, I don't want her to drive my duramax. I will post back on how they do.

I am not sure I would call them economy. They are from CARQUEST. they say kyb excel G on them. They seem to ride and handle good. The price is extra cheap because I get them at dealer cost. I did not have any choice either. I had to have them today and I was not going with Monroe, and I don't know much about Gabriel. The car seems a lot better now. I just hope I don't have to wrench on it again for while and these struts hold up good. Only thing left is to get a alignment on tue. Thanks all for the help.

I was looking around the net. It looks like the excel G is the same strut as the gr-2, I got this info off the kyb website. Looks like I got a pretty good price on them.
