I've checked Rock Auto and it seems there are multiple options for the front hub on my '99 GTP. Can someone point me to how I determine which design I have? Local store wants $120 for the hub/bearing assembly from a domestic manufacturer. I'm ok with that, unless there's a huge savings to go with an online supplier. Any suggestions? I sent an inquiry to the w body store asking about the origin of theirs.

x2 on timken. ONLY do that. I replaced 2 sets of front bearings from ZZP. I know they are pricey, but they wont let you down

There should only be two options. They will ask with a clip or without. Thats just the clip on the wiring. It doesnt matter really, but i got mine with a clip so i could secure it back where it was when i removed it.

I believe you can choose between metal and plastic, I got the plastic one (Timken) the first one I put in when bad (no idea how, followed point-point instructions on the supplied link) but they have a one year warrently, so I took it off and got a new one, been fine, except if the car sits for a long time, theres a little screaching the first couple meters, not sure if something is settling when the car is not in use for what.
    But ya.. timken

I replaced the hub/bearing this weekend and found the metal clip that holds the wire is nearly rubbed and rusted in two pieces. I'm talking about the metal ring that has the three bolt holes in it that slips under to hold the wiring that runs into the bearing. Is this a dealer item only?

Good info in that link. I have a 2001 GTP with the ABS and Traction Control lights off, can't pull a code with my scanguage. How else can I tell which hub needs replaced? I'd like to avoid buying two new ones if possible. Are the rear sensors built into the hub like the front ones? Thanks in advance guys.

..You can also jack up each side and see which wheel has play in it when you wiggle it at 12 and 6 o clock.

My hubs themselves seem fine...no noise when turning and no play when wiggling either. I am just worried about getting the ABS light and "Traction Control Off" light turned off. I am under the impression that I need a wheel speed sensor, but don't know which one or how to tell.

Do i need new wheel bearings?

I noticed that as I am driving there is a loud hum coming from the left front tire. As I am going about 45mph it gets even louder. I noticed if I turn the steering wheel to the right a little bit as I am going 45mph the noise goes away. Is it the wheel bearing? Which ones should I put on? Do I need to do both fornt wheels at the same time?

Yes, sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Easiest way to tell is just up the front of the car, put it in neutral, and spin each wheel by hand. You should be able to hear a hum from the one that is bad.

Another unscientific way to tell is drive the car for a bit. As soon as you get out, put your hand on the center of the rim on each side. If one side is noticeably hotter than the other, target that side. Again, not surefire, but usually a good indication.

I would only replace the bearing that is bad. Why replace a part that isn't bad? Doesn't make sense to me.

I wouldn't use national bearing. The only brand I would consider is Timken or AC Delco. Timken can be had for around $100 on Rock Auto.

What's the life expectancy of the bearings? My car is 11 years old with 67k miles... I just don't want to be inconvienced to do it again in a month

The stock bearings are good for quite a few miles. Usually around 100k.

Is it a bearing if the "sound" I'm hearing is more of a rubbing sound than a clicking sound? It does not vary with RPM's, just actual speed. It seems to be coming from the front, but I can't tell which side. A friend suggested it might be an axle?!? It is a faint noise that I can hear but do not feel it thru the steering wheel.

wheel bearing will hum at freeway speeds and can make and feel grinding sounds when turning.

Axles will pop and or click while turning and can cause a faint hop to the wheels at higher speeds.
