    Hello,

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT and here's my dilemma... I have this clunking noise that's coming from the front left of my car. It happens when: I put the car in reverse, put the car in drive, stop hard and then go, and turn the steering wheel and give it some gas in reverse. The clunking noise does not happen every single time, but most of the time. My mechanics have replaced the front left & right tie rods, front left & right wheel bearings, and the intermediate steering shaft. But, the clunking noise has not gone away! I joined this in hopes that anyone of you guys may know what the problem/solution is. It is really bugging the hell out of me!!!

How do the ends of the sway bar look? a Broken or split end sway bar will cause the clunking noise. I've seen it a lot on stock sway bars.

If that's not the case, I would point to your Ball Joints. Especially if they are the originals on a car with that many miles and age. (I know, mine has 213,xxx miles on it so I have no room to talk about advanced age on a car)

I had similar problem with my car, I did the upper dogbone bushing mod trick and it made all the clunck, bangs, and rattles dissapear. It it totaly quite when putting into any gear, and going over bumps, and when comming to a stop and then hitting the gas.

I got the same thing. Only happens once per drive, and not every time. My 89' 525i did the same thing too.

mine does this too! the first time it happened all i could think of was that sounds expensive. is this something you can ignore without any significant repercussions?

I don't think anyone could answer that. If you ignore something, and it turns out to be a ball joint or tie rod that's about to let go..... Then it could make sure you stop ignoring it.

Suspension components starting to fail, usually destroy neighboring components and become a lot more expensive then they need to be when you start ignoring things you shouldn't

I found my clunking problem and it only cost 10 bucks. Sway bar link kit was all I needed, both were rusted through whew glad it was just that, now she handles mutch better.

Well, I picked my car today from the shop. I have been outta town for a few weeks so the shop had alot of time to take a look at my car. They told me that they narrowed it down to either the front left ball joint or the front left lower control arm. I have a full bumper to bumper warranty, but it does not cover clunks and squeaks...go figure. The warranty is good till 100,000 miles so hopefully something goes wrong before then. My car currently has a little over 82,000 miles on it.

How do you do this mod trick? Is this something I can do in my garage?

    Give this a try.
Instead of using an easyout, I just reinstalled the bolt and nut to gain traction to turn the rubber.
