Thread: e-brake rubbing inside of rotor

well, figured out what was happening, i never use my e-brake when parking, some people have in my car. but im pretty sure its rubbing the inside of my rotor. is there a way to readjust this, or do i have to get a whole kit to do it? makes awful grinding sound when driving (now i know what it is! i can diagnose my own problems, isnt that a joy?)

i found this on automotive forums:

Parking Brake Shoe & Cable
Adjustment
Apply and release the parking brake six times.
Ensure that the parking brake pedal assembly is fully released.
Raise and safely support the vehicle.
Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies.
Remove both rear calipers.
Remove both rear caliper brackets.
Loosen the parking brake cable.
Remove both rear brake rotors.

Set the brake drum measuring gauge inside of the parking brake drum at the widest point.
Tighten the set screw on the measuring tool to lock it at the widest point.
Position the measuring gauge over the park brake shoe at the widest point.
Turn the adjuster on the actuator until the measuring gauge just touches the parking brake shoe. Adjust both sides.
Install the brake rotors.
Install both rear caliper brackets.
Install both rear calipers.
Install the rear wheel and tire assemblies.
Adjust the parking brake cable by turning the nut at the equalizer while spinning both rear wheels. When either rear wheel starts to drag, back off the nut one full turn.
Lower the vehicle enough to check the parking brake pedal travel.
Apply the parking brake; check the parking brake pedal travel.
Release the parking brake. Verify that both wheels rotate freely.

and not sure what he is saying, but i think my driver side e-brake shoe is out of adjustment, is there a way to get it back to spec without the tool?

its fully engaged at two clicks, and still makes gridning noise when released and spinning tires...what the heck? im messing with equalizer nut, not sure which way is which, but im watching the little actuators when i spin, left seems to loosen..but still grinding...

The walk thru you posted seems to be right on from what my old man used when he fixed it for me...if not, the exact same one. I wasn't paying attention when he fixed it...I must have been watching cops at the time...

lol ok man i will try it again, not sure which one is the adjusting nut, but it seems its the only one. now which way to tighten/loosen? i think i will just snug the cable so it has some tension instead of pulling tight, seems ok. i fiddled with it some and it doesnt grind as much now, but it still makes some sounds...

sound is completely gone, messed with it a little and got it to have a slight bit of slack, but not super loose...works like a champ. thanks guys!
