Thread: What spare tire (doughnut) to use with 12" brake upgrade?

I used the search and couldn't find anything that addressed this question. I have done the 12" front brake upgrade and now the stock spare tire (doughnut) will not fit on the front. I remember hearing/reading somewhere about a spare tire (doughnut) that would fit. Does anybody know which one will work?

Could grab one out of a 00-05 Impala or Monte from a junk yard. Those cars have 12" brakes stock and I can assure you my doughnut fits the front.

In reality, though, you should never put the spare on the drive wheels anyway. Move one up from the rear and put the spare on there. Our diffs are weak enough as it is, putting the donut on there is just asking for trouble.

You could do a mean one wheel burnout with the doughnut for sure.

Tire plug kits ruin the tire. Plugs are never as good as a decent patch. Just throw the spare on and take the tire to a tire shop for a $25 patch and be on your way.

Almost every tire shop here use plugs and not patches. I don't know why.

Plugs really have no place in car tires unless they are used in conjunction with a patch.

I've never seen a legitimate tire shop (Firestone, Gateway, etc) use plugs. My friend who used to work for one said they're forbidden by their home offices from using plugs.

I guess they didn't get the memo here cause everybody plugs tires.

Plugging tires is a quick & eazy(lazy) way for tire shops to fix a flat. A patch is a much better fix. you never hear of a patch popping out.
