I've been searching through the forums and found that my Intermediate Steering Shaft is whats causing the clunk in my steering wheel. I've heard some people saying greasing it will get rid of the clunk which makes sense, but does it actually fix the problem? If greasing it is the only thing I would need to do then that would be great but if the shaft needs repaired then I would like to fix it rather than just covering it up.

you replace it, cant repair it.

get your ball joints checked out first, they tend to clunk as well.

Also, is there a risk of the shaft failing completely and losing steering while driving or will I be ok to drive it until I can replace it?

not a chance at all. its a slip joint thats clunking, if thats it. i chased a clunk down, last thing i fixed was the ball joints, no more clunk. if you never did lower control arms just change em. 100 for the pair on line for new a arms.

Ok well yeah I’m pretty sure it’s the ISS as it only clunks when turning the wheel but I will check the ball joints just to be safe. Thanks for the help.

if you feel play in the wheel stopped engine off and a slight clunk, it could be the rack too. i had one with internal slop. tie rods can also click.

Hate to be that guy, but I've had 2 cars with iss clunk. Both of them I just cleaned and packed with new grease and never heard the clunk again. I'm sure there's a chance it won't work, just saying what worked for me.

How did you access it to grease it? And also I torqued down all my wheels and I think whoever sold me the car didn’t tighten them down enough because it doesn’t really clunk anymore. It seems like it does a tiny tiny bit but it’s like 95% better so one of the wheels must have been loose. Still might grease up the ISS though.

LOL .. I once got fresh sneakers and thought I had an axle going from the noise on a corner. Found wheels to be loose, kinda scary isn't it?

Glad you figured it out. I was also going to suggest jacking it up and checking the rack before doing any work.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
