I know this has been asked but I cant seem to find a straight answer..

I have a 2002 Grand Prix. 400W amp in the trunk. I ran all new 12 awg speaker wire to the aftermarket 5 1/4 speakers in the doors and 6x9s in the rear deck. Also i am using the factory head unit (kicks good. I dont like aftermarket radios).

My question is, can i hook the stock tweeters back up in the doors? The 5 1/4s are 4 ohms. From what i read, the stock tweeters have an inline crossover. Where is it? Is it in that section between the tweeter connector and the tweeter itself?

And also, can the crossover or capacitor or whatever it exactly is, can it handle about 70 RMS Watts? Thats all i need is a fire lol. Capacitors are cool till they pop and burn

    Thanks!

The crossover is built in the line. You should see it if you have the wire to the tweeter in your hand. The crossover does nothing more than allow highs only to come through. It blocks mids and lows.

Will it handle 70 watts? Maybe for a few seconds. Most high end tweeters won't handle 70 watts. Those stockers I am guessing will only handle about 20 tops.

You use aftermarket speakers, but don't like aftermarket head units? Ok...

why do you like aftermarket speakers?... Wait, I'll answer for you, because they SOUND better!

well, let me help you out there... Aftermarket head units do the same (produce better sound)!!!

you went through half the trouble of doing the RIGHT job, but you're trying to use stock tweeters? That and the half of the work you didn't do leads to lousy noise. You're speakers may KICK as you say, but unmatched tweeters/speakers and lack of propper crossovers, etc. just makes for noise!

do yourself a favor, get a set of separates for the front, with the tweeters and crossovers all set up. Usually, those sets will handle higher wattage as well.

    Thank me later! Lol

If the tweeters in the GPs are anything like what came in the Bonnevilles, then they will not last long. Tweeters are super cheap. So get some new ones. Better yet, get components for the front doors.
