This was behind the front dash panel for my 04 Impala, attached to the panel with some type of adhesive. What is it?
I'm guessing some kind of damage / mercury / anti-theft sensor.

looks like part of an alarm system
Looks like the sensor for a remote start system to me. Or what he said^
double sided tape is aftermarket. peel off the tape and the sensor info should be under it
where does the wire go?
Okay, peeled off the double-sided tape, no identifying numbers. Opened up the plastic case, and under it... another case, wrapped in rubber. No part numbers etc on any of it.... so I opened the other case. Still, no identifying numbers, but you can see what appears to be a heatsink on one side and a single solder dot on the other... sure does look like a receiver of some kind. But what for? It appears that attempting to remove the heatsink could possibly damage the device.

I traced the wire back to the ignition switch area where it seems to join other wires... it doesn't look like it actually goes to the ignition switch though.
it may be one of those emi sensing rpm sensors for a remote start or 4 the antenna
I had one of those on my old honda civic, the previous owner said it was for talking on the phone back then when they didnt have bluetooth.
I have one for my gps navigation for the pioneer double din head unit
