I have a 2001 grand prix gt 3.8 n/s. I also have a aftermarket sony xplod (gt500w head unit) a kenwood 9103d 1200 1- ohm stable amp and a 2009 kicker l7 solo baric 2- ohm dual voice coil amp. With all new boston speakers. The sub sits in its custom ported box but sounds like crap. its not blown but i have it hooked up running positive to positve and negative to negative i think this gives the 2-ohm sub a 1 ohm load im curisous becasue i hear some people tell me my amp is not a true 1 ohm amp is this why it sounds like ****.

IF the amp is not stable it will shut down.

    Many things it could be.
    Crappy amp.
Crappy box. (usally #1 issue) the box will make or break a sub.
    Bad Crossover settings.
how you internal wire the sub? was it SVC? DVC? ( all that will do though is tell the amp how many watts to push)

Now when you say sounds like crap just loud and boomy? That is what L7 is good for
Does not sound clean? You got the wrong sub.

i would check the settings on your amp:
make sure the phase is set to 0
have the x-over settings around 80hertz
make sure your gain is set correctly and not clipping the sub
make sure your box is tuned correctly and all joints are sealed
make sure you head unit is set up properly.
if you need more help just ask.
