I own a 2002 Grand Prix GT and I am looking to upgrade my door speakers. My stock door speakers are 5.25 inches and I'm looking to bump up the size to a 6.5 inch Rockford Fosgate coaxial pair or speakers ( Rockford Fosgate T165 Power 6.5-Inch 2-way Coaxial Full-Range Speaker:Amazon:Car Electronics ) you can view them there. I want to do this without any modifications to my door panel, with the curvature of the door panel around the speakers grill I wanted to know if anyone has had experience with this before. I am planning on placing the new speakers in and allowing the sound to leak through the original 5.25 grill. I found these adapters ( Xscorpion SP-AD6054.12 5-1/4" to 6-1/2" Universal Speaker Adapter ) and would like to know if my speakers will fit, I was curious about the depth of the magnet. Let me know what all I can do so I don't dive in head first with no water to land in.

People have crammed the 6.5s into the door. I don't know if you can get away without modification though.

Was there any modification to the door panel? How did the magnet size affect the fit?

no modification to the door panel and the magnet size doesn't cause any problems. There will be some trimming to the stock speaker mounts tho

If you want to upgrade to 6.5" spaekers your best bet is to get the stock speaker mounts from an newer monte carlo like 2003 and up. I used the speaker mounts from them and installed into my grand prix with no issues. But it also depends on how large the magnet is on the speaker. I didnt have to modify anything to get my to work.

So is the magnet size going to be a problem or not? Cause the magnets on the Power series are quite large. And will the adapter I put a link to do the job so I don't have too tearng door panels off old Monte Carlos at my local junkyard

No the magnet size will not be a problem because when you modify your stock speaker it takes the factory baffle outta the way. And no the adapter you posted a link to will not work. Im running the power series fosgates

So do I just tap the holes for the speakers instead of using an adapter? Sorry if my questions are repetitive, I just want to boost the size for more potential in sound down the road with larger speakers hahaha.

once you cut the stock mount to fit the new speakers the mounts holes to hold the speaker to the factory mount should line right up. Also its a good idea to go ahead and install some sound deadener while you have the speaker mount detached from the door

So all I have to do is cut the original baffle out to fit the new speakers then I'm golden?

I'm a little stumped on this one. Based on this thread I went out and bought some Polk Audio DXi650 6.5" speakers. Now I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how to squeeze them in. I had the factory 5.25's installed. First off I'm stuck with the crappy factory grill because there's no way of fitting the 7.5" grill over the existing hole. Second problem if I do mount the 6.5's in the original factory speaker holder with some modifications, the factory grill will push up against the edge of the speakers. I was considering removing the factory holder entirely, and mounting a piece of plywood to the door opening, and then mount the speaker to the plywood. If I mount the speaker in the door itself, it is no longer pointing toward the factory opening. It will probably sound muffled.

What I thought was going to be "just a little trimming", is turning out to be a PITA.

Any suggestions? I did like the idea of using speaker mounts off a Monte, but my fear is again the speaker will be pressing up against the factory grill. Anyone have any pictures of how you mounted the 6.5's? It was almost looking easier to mount them up on the door near the passengers shoulder....but it's too shallow.

I had no clearance problems with fosgate. But I'm not to familiar with Polk. Is it barely contacting the factory grill or is it totally laid against it. I notice some plastic tabs in my door panels that looked they coulda caused a clearance issue but they didnt
