I looked all over for a write up on how to mod the front door panel to fit a 6 1/2. Does anyone know a write up they can link me or can someone give me some tips on a good way to do it.

I just put in 6.5s last weekend. The only spot of the pannelthat hits is the 10 o'clock position on the drivers door and the 2 o'clock on the passenger door. I installed hertz 6.5s and was able to fit the included grill on and snapped the pannel back on. When I removed it the only spots that had a small indent were the spots I listed. I removed the stock 5.25 mounting plastic held the speaker down and as far foward as it would go. I did drill holes but that was no biggie. Worked great. I do believe if you pop out the stock speaker grill in the door you wl see where you need to cut down. Just use like 4 or 5 of the pannel screws so its not so hard to take it on and off while modifying. But if your speakers came with grills you can do the same as I did with out modding only drilling a few holes. Good luck
i thought the bracket in the door behind the panels that holds the speakers comes out and you can replace with a different one. i can't remember the setup exactly but i'm pretty sure you can put a different mount on the door itself. take the door panel off. 2 hex bolts behind the arm handle and the rest pops off.
That may be possible but I think if you add any more depth than the speaker more mods are probably required. I'd say even a quarter inch and the pannel would be smashing my rubber surrounds in if the grills were not protecting them. If he wants to heavily mod the doors I'm sure he could get just about anything in there. Not sure the speakers being used but I feel the way I did is decent and I'm using ~$300 speakers. But I agree there are probably adapters or mounting rings that people use. The way I have it the speakers are just flat with the door as opposed to the stock speakers being angled into the door pannel. Can't comment on the difference between the two because I never heard the stock speakers. But the components I have now scream
the stock speakers suck but i kept the tweeters by the mirrors. i'm 99% sure the mounting bracket that holds the 5 1/4's comes out and you can put one in that holds 6 1/2. the depth of the door should be fine and there shouldn't be any clearance issues with the bracket that holds 6 1/2's. the door is pretty deep.
I just put my 6.5's right on and screwed them down to the stock plastic 5.25" mounting bezel. You want to move the as far the the bottom and front of the car as possible. Mine is close but doesnt touch the door panel. I plan on redoing it however and cutting half an inch off around the plastic and make a wood mounting plate and glue to the plastic. This way it would still be angled and not be as close to the door panel.
I do wonder about the tweeters however. What do you guys normally do? I like that the factory spots are high but the drivers side points directly into the dash... Right now I have them mounted in the grills in the door. But I'd like to get them higher up
the tweeter sounds fine where it is. when I didn't have it, you noticed it wasn't there. so the dash doesn't seem to affect its sound at all to me.
There used to be a write up on here for this. IIRC you just cut the plastic thing the factory speakers sat it to fit the 6.5"
