okay as some of you know ive been asking a ton of questions on here over the past month and this weekend i finally started to hook up all my equipment. yesterday i got the head unit installed and it looks great! (pics to come) and today i am going to finish up installin the amplifier and sub woofers. if you look at the owners manual here on page 3
http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/hi...fierManual.pdf it says to mount the amp horizontally. but i was wondering if this would be an okay place to mount it? (on back of the driver side back seat)

ive been told by tons of people that mounting it on your sub box is really bad for the amp and can damage it

Actually, mounting it like that would make more sense. If there were just a heat sink on the top of the amp, it'd make sense to mount it horizontally. Heat rises, so I dont think it'd help to have the bottom heat sink facing the ground.

03 GTP...Its got pulleys and stuff.

Make sure it says you can mount it in the orientation you are aiming to. If it doesn't say..maybe contact the manufacturer to ensure it's ok.

Mine is mounted to the box but the screw that holds the power cable in keeps vibrating loose and the amp keeps shutting off. Due to overheating I think?

I didn't make a panel. Only a couple brackets to mount to the rear deck. All my other stuff is in the doors etc.

Dont mount to the box, the box flexes due to the pressure difference inside of the box and can flex the internal circuitry and pop off important bits. Second, I like mounting to the back of the seat pull down if it will fit. Or you can mount it like I did

chamilton- is that just wood or what?

as far as the amp saying how to mount it it says "Amplifiers should be mounted with the fins running horizontally for best convection cooling, to minimize overheating. Purchase the best quality RCA cables you can afford, for reliability and less engine noise interference in the audio system. It is highly recommended that the amplifier be mounted to a board of MDF or other solid structure using the 4 mounting screws provided. Avoid mounting the amplifier to metal as this can introduce noise and other unwanted issues. When mounting the amplifier, ensure that it is mounted HORIZONTALLY, as shown in the diagram above, for optimal heat dissipation. Mounting amplifiers to speaker enclosures is not recommended as this can cause damage to the amplifier components. When choosing a location for mounting the amplifier, ensure that you check for clearance from wires, gas tank, electrical devices and brake lines etc."

this doesnt make much sense because the only way i see heat can escape is through some holes in the bottom...

Your amp will be fine where you want to mount it.

The heat escapes through the heat sinks. (fins on the top and bottom) I still think it will be better off mounted like you have it due to the reasons I stated before.

While I respect what the manual says, and agree that mounting the amplifier horizontally is the best for heat dispersion, you can safely mount it pretty much however you damn well please, just as long as its to open air and not being covered or sealed in any way to reduce the amount of air flow cooling the fins.

Thank you for the props, and as for what everything is made out of, I welded brackets to the trunk and made amplifier racks with MDF covered with some vinyl, but the sub enclosure and trunk lid speakers have an MDF backbone with a a ton of fiberglassing for some beautiful curves.
