I have a 2008 Grand Prix 3.8 with a single disc CD and satellite ready radio. The screen lighting has dimmed on half of it, and it is getting annoying to look at. I have been looking for options and I either want to replace with an aftermarket unit or buy a 6 disc factory unit. I am seeing some talk about having to program the radio if I go with a factory replacement. What is that about? Also, I have found several 6 disc factory units with part# 21004246, are those satellite ready? Is there anything special I need to do if I went with an aftermarket unit other than buying a mounting kit and harness?

    thanks for any help

From 2004 and newer the factory radios are programmed only to work in the car that they came installed in from the factory. With that said you can replace your factory radio with another factory radio but you have to have a dealer reprogram the new radio to work in your car, about $100, some type of security measure I think. The 6 disc CD changer radios are satellite capable only if they have the BAND button and not one that says AM/FM. You could always go aftermarket and get the mounting kit and proper harness but you would lose your satellite radio from the factory unit, you can always buy the satellite adapter for an aftermarket radio also.
