I have a 1997 GTP that I am trying to upgrade the factory system. I already have a new Kenwood HU ordered that should be here tomorrow, and am now doing my research and trying to decide what speakers I want to fit my budget.

From what the installers at various car audio shops are telling me I have 6x9s in the back, and 5.25 component up front.

I am wondering if it is worth the headache to move up to 6.5's in the door. There seem to be a wider range of choices in this size, as well as I assume to larger speaker would provide a fuller, deeper range.

If it is indeed best to upgrade to the larger size, does somone make a bracket/adapter to make this an easy and clean install? I lack the necessary skills and equipment/tools to fabricate my own, but surely somone out there makes them for a reasonable price.

    Thanks,
    Sean

Do you mean cut our the circle bigger? or cut all that extra plastic off and have left a flat piece of plastic? I have extra speaker holders that I want to cut up now to get ready for 6.5's.

By no means is it impossible to put 6.5's in the doors. I'll be installing mine sometime next month hopefully, but there are 2 different types of plastic speaker mounting panels on the door in the grand prix's. For the 4 door models they have a panel that tilts the speaker up towards the listener, there are a couple how-to's on modifying the existing bezel to install the 6.5's one is on this forum and another 2 can be found from searching on google for long enough. For the 2 door coupe panels atleast in my friends and my cars case the panels are a bit different. They are a flat plastic panel with a ring around them to help seal them to the door. These are a little more annoying to install. My method is going to be creating a middle bezel to go in the current panel and bolt up, then cutting it an an angle to tilt the woofers. As for the tweeter placement if you have 3/4 inch tweeters you can generally mount them in the stock tweeter location or cut a hole in the sale panel. If you have a 1 inch tweeter more than likely your gonna need bondo, some pvc, some very good glue, sand paper and a whole lotta elbow grease, hello tweeter pods lol

^Take some pics, I have the tilt type of mountings, and i tried to make flat ones out of MDF and just could get the door panel on without it pushing/damaging the speaker (and the MDF was only about 1/4 inch think. I tried or about 2 hours modding different shapes, etc.
