Rear Deck Speaker Installation

Has anyone does this on the 04+ Grand Prix? I heard it's a pain in the ass and I don't know if the labor would seriously account for it being that.

I was quote 287.60 for parts and labor for the one speaker. I think that's a bit much when the speaker itself is only 129.

A step by step or maybe a walk through of how to do it would be nice. I have the monsoon stereo system.

I'm in the process of making a tutorial for this. It probably takes about 1.5 hours to change the speakers if you're handy with a wrench. It's a total pain in the ass, but there's nothing difficult - just tedium.

My advice: Do not bother just to replace them with the stock speakers - and definitely do two at a time. This is only worthwhile if you upgrade. (I got used stockers on the cheap from Morad and it still wasn't worth the effort to me.)

Also, at 1.5 hours, that guy is asking for $100/hour.

That install had better come with a happy ending.

And you can definitely find a better speaker at $129.

Quick and Dirty:
1. There's two T-shaped handles under each seat where your balls would sit. Pull those. Harder. Your rear seat will pop out. Remove it.
**Pro Tip: You'll find approximately $0.82 and an entire box of crackers. Keep the money, the crackers can be discarded as they are a 30,000 mile part and have been dragging down your 1/4 mile times.
2. There's a 15mm? bolt on the door-side edge of the hinge on both seat panels. You'll have to squeeze it past some cushion. Jiggle your panels out.
3. The bottom of the seat frame is held down with three 18mm? nuts and two 18mm? bolts. The bolts will require your Man Hand for removal.
4. The top of the frame is held on by four 10mm bolts. Piece of cake.
5. Remove the seat belts from the bottom of the frame with some serious jiggling. Might help to use a flat head screwdriver or loud yelling.
6. Pop out the frame, being careful not to break the plastic at the top.
7. Fold all the seatbelts through the slits in the upper desk tso that they lay behind it.
8. The carpet-coated cardboard deck is held in by two big plastic railroad spikes right under the seatbelt holes you need to pull out. Yell at them, too.
9. Carefully remove the deck. Try not to crack your speaker grills - they're ironically fragile. Also, don't lean on the compass thing in front of your amp.
**Pro Tip: Have a vacuum cleaner handy for the three hundred dead bees you find.
10. Your speakers are held in by two plastic tabs each. You can figure that out for yourself if you got this far.
11. Use a flat head screwdriver, roofing nail, or prison shank to un-clip the speaker wires from the speaker.
12. Swap speakers.
13. *****TEST SPEAKERS BEFORE RE-ASSEMBLY OF SEATS******
14. Re-assemble seats.

I laughed so hard when I read this... My car only has 46,000km on it so I don't think I'll find too many bees and coinage.

Should I take off the negative terminal in the car or no?

You're saying I should do this myself then, correct? Do you have pictures?

sorry, i have an 02 so id b no help but im like half hour away from ya lol if ya had the same yr as mine, but the rear deck speakers may b same removal procedure

It doesn't hurt to unhook the battery. By the time I got the deck off, my amp had shut off, so I didn't worry about it.

I'd say to do it yourself. If your time is that valuable, I'd say find someone to do it for $30. Or beer.

My time is seriously not that valuable and I'm sure that I could accomplish it myself.

Just the 6x9 deck speakers.

Yeah, I used stock ones. Plug comes out, plug goes in. Piece of cake.

I am trying to do this today with my 2006 GT. I have fold down seats and am stuck. I had to remove the seats when I did ky 2000 GTP, but this is a different setup. I have the seats down and the 10mm bolts holding some bracket like thing that goes the whole width of the back seat. This seems to have also allowed the rear deck to be no longer attached, but that bracket thing is in the way. It is attached to the rear seat "ends" that don't fold down (the outer 6" or so) and I can't seem to be able to figure out how to get them to let go. Ugh....

And just like that I am in business. Remove bottom of seat. Remove 18mm bolts and nuts (yes the bolts are snug due to locktite), remove 10mm bolts holding on the top of the seat back, pop off rear a pillar covers, pop out the two practice clips on each end if the rear deck (they look Luke plastic circles for those that have never seen them before), remove the rear deck lid (obviously the seat belts get pulled through)... now to remove the speakers, replace and reassemble....
