I have been slowly upgrading the sound on the GP and I am now done with the head unit and moving on to speakers. I sent an email over to crutchfield and he said to put some boston's all around.

"Based on your feedback and the speakers listed to fit the Pontiac Grand Prix, I recommend the Boston Acoustics S55 5-1/4" speakers for the doors, along with the Boston Acoustics S45 4" speakers & Boston Acoustics S95 6x9" speakers for the rear deck. They are very efficient speakers with excellent bass response that will deliver the improved clarity & imaging you want for your system. I'm confident you will be very pleased with their sound quality and performance."

    Price:
    $284.47

They will be powered by my JVC head unit that has 20w RMS. (JVC KD-HDR50)

    Good idea?

one last thing, I do not want to go add a sub or anything that involved as I think the car is on its last bit of life and I want to be able to remove what I put in fairly easily. So when it does finally die (and i decide not to revive it) I can put this setup in the GTP I will hopefully replace it with.

I'm kind of a head first guy...I'd definitely grab an amp for the speakers. Then...if I'm throwing in an amp for the component speakers, why not a sub?

Think of it this way too...if you're throwing the car out then maybe it's a good car for your learning curve? Speakers sound very different based on locations. Hack this car up so the GTP stays nice.

removeing all the speakers would take more work than just removing a sub

If I was you, you could go with the boston acoustics. Just go with 6.5" er's and get an amp for them. That is one thing that you will not regret, but as for the 4" you are just wasting your time.

if you could find a nice 4" component set you could do stereo mid bass that digs deep. There's a 6.5" sub that comes to mind...I'll have to find it...forgot the name...

what about the door speakers? would they be worth it?

And more on the sub. I have very little faith in the car atm, so I am not sure if I want to invest a lot of time in wiring up an amp or sub to have the engine die 2 days later (thats what happened when I put in the head unit in march). Speakers would also be a good stepping stone for the learning curve as I am a novice at the wiring part.

If the car is still running in I may add the sub with some birthday funds + saving from work over the summer or i will wait till next Christmas.

My point with the post was to get some info about whether replacing the speakers was worth it so like what was said about the 4 inchers is what I was looking for.

Oh, almost forgot the Head unit has a built in MOSFET amp which will be used for the speakers.

I would at least recommend getting the KTP 445 matched with an alpine head unit since you're not shooting for a real amp.

    Here's a nice mid bass...

I've read some guys getting as low as 40hz with it. Not bad. It can be used for IB as well.

I have a feeling cheaper is better

I mean...all those speakers from Boston for $280? Maybe I have a reading comprehension problem?

Why don't you just ditch the car now, and start on something else, rather than waiting until it's dead and worth a lot less?
At least now you can make a little change off of it.

Worth a lot less? My 04 GTP apparently is $4k at a local dealership. They can suck it.

^good idea, but technically its my dad's car. I've suggested several times to sell, but he doesn't think it would be wise as he has already sunk a bunch into the car.

    another update.
Upon further inspection the 6x9's in the car are dead. hardly any sound at all and the 4's next to em are really distorted and near death. probably due to the moisture problem I had last year (I actually had frost form on the inside several times last winter)and the fact that the speakers are 13 years old.

    Front speakers are fine though.
