Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
OK all of you Axxess folks. I have an ASWC that as mentioned on page 1 I used flawlessly in my 2000 GTP. Now that I am going to put it in my 2006 GT, I am stumped on 1 part of the install.
Step #4 says (and this was not something for the older car) to:
"Connect A6 of the vehicles harness to a 12 volt accessory wire."
What? The wiring harness doesn't use A6, but I guess that my car has a wire (Violet) that goes to A6. Why would I want to send 12 volts back INTO the car? Makes no sense to me.
Do I dare do it?
I know that I need to tap my Orange/Green wire into A7 for the signal, but I am concerned about why I would need to feed the power back into the car's harness.
Help...

Call the tech support line in your manual they are very helpful and will tell you exactly what to do
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
Called them up and they just said that I need to connect the black to ground, the red to 12 volt accessory, and the orange/green to pin A7. They said not to worry about A6. I guess that I am confused since there instructions specifically say to "Connect A6 of the vehicles harness to a 12 volt accessory wire". Maybe A6 SUPPLIES 12 volt accessory? I don't know. I've already got the 3 wires hooked up to correct wires on the harness, so this still just confuses me. Maybe it is an error in their directions?
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
Do what you were told on the phone and let's get this working. These should be a three wire and one plug in connection.
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
You pay all my expences ill come hook it up for ya, its really simple your reading into it to much
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
I just compared it to the instructions for when I hooked it up to my 2000 GTP. That instruction line was not in the previous instructions, but is there in the 2006 GT set.
My guess is that it just isn't needed if I already have power, ground, and signal.
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
Does it work? did you program it?
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
Programming is easy, but I haven't installed it yet. I thought that I would get it all figured out and soldered up before popping the dash and pulling the radio (which I plan to do tomorrow during the day).
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
Here's how I did it..
Take your radio harness and the adapter to the factory plug, make all the connections except the power and ground. Then add in your steering wheel control interface and any other items for the radio (hd etc) that need power and ground that it can provide. Solder it all up and toss it in.
Re: Steering wheel control interface install help!!!!
After calling Metra yesterday about the "put 12 v accessory back into the car on A6" and being told "you don't need that, the directions are wrong", I put everything in today, and the radio worked right off the bat, and the chimes worked... But I could not get the Axxess configured. It saw the radio, but not the vehicle.
So another call to Metra, and after waiting 20+ minutes for someone to answer, I tell the "tech" that I had the power, ground, and signal wire hooked up. He asked how I was connecting the wires, I said that they were soldered and had shrink tubing over everything and still no luck. He asked like I was bothering him and walked me through the reprogramming again, and duh, like it is hard to reset it and then press the volume up button.. Anyway, the guy I talked to basically said "Well, we've testing that with 40 Grand Prixs, so we know it works. It must be something with your wiring." No other help, no "lets try to figure this out..." It was somewhat rude.
So I mentioned to him that I called in yesterday and was told to not worry about sending 12 v back into the car. The guy says (with attitude), "Well, that's your problem." I said to him, "No, that is THE problem, not MY problem." He didn't get it, and I didn't want to get into how he was acting rude. I just said that the person I talked to yesterday told me not to do it and that there is a gap in their internal support system. He said that the other tech should never have said that and that the reason that you are sending 12 v back INTO the car, is that you are feeding 12 v in to the wire that ends up going into the steering wheel controls themselves since there used to be power provided by the factory wiring harness.
OK, makes sense.
So it really takes doing 4 connections. Black for ground, Red for 12V power, Orange/Green (in the case of the Grand Prixs) to the dark blue of the car's harness A7 for signal, and then run a 12V line to the Violet A6 of the car's harness and you are in business.
So it is working anyway!
