Not 100% sure on the 04+ GPs but I know on the 03's and below they had two speakers in the rear deck on each side. I have not really looked at the rear desk speakers in any 40+ to know if they carry the same setup as the 03's and below do.

    Just a thought.

it should be at least 2 6x9's and 2 4x6's in the rear deck, as far as I know there are no subs that come with the monsoon package.

wasn't the "sub" an option (and it seems like it was a 6 incher anyway) I could have sworn I saw a couple monsoon cars with them (although they may not have been gp's)

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I thought it would be silly for me to start something new with a similar question - I'm trying to figure out if I've got the Monsoon, or normal audio setup in my rig. It's an '06 GP and as far as I know, it's base model so far as the audio goes. The only reason I have to question this is that the Crutchfield adviser isn't totally clear to me.

As far as I can tell, I've got two 6x9s in the back, and two speakers in each of the front doors (probably a 6.75 and a much smaller tweeter). I'm attaching a shot of the passenger side front door - can anyone tell me if this is the base system, and what the speaker sizes are?

Wonderful, and thank you for the quick reply. So it's a 2" and a 6.5" I'll have to double check, but I'm almost positive the Infinity gear I pulled out of my old rig will fit. I take it that this is the standard, non-monsoon audio system?

I was under the impression the Monsoon was:
    1 Center Speaker
    2 Front Tweeters
    2 Front Mid-Range
    2 Rear Mid-Range
    2 Rear Woofer/Sub-Range
I know the wiring supports this (From the amp located under the rear deck)

    this should help
I just bought an 07 GXP with the Monsoon system, and I have found some additional information:

The Monsoon amplifier is an 8 channel amp. The center, front tweeters, front woofers, and rear "midranges" all have their own channels. The rear woofers (I wouldn't call them subs) are wired in parallel and are amped by the last channel.

The rear deck has what looks like a traditional 6x9, but it is bi-amped. That's where the total of 9 speakers comes from, even though there are only 7 speaker mounting points. You can see 4 wires heading to each speaker. The 2" speakers are powered individually, with wires that wrap around the speaker to the top. I haven't traced the wiring yet, but according to the schematic, there is a splice in the harness for the rear speakers that puts them in parallel (as opposed to a connection internal to the amp). If you are upgrading your system (which I'm just starting to) then you should know that the "subwoofer" channel of the amp expects to see a 2 ohm load (two 4 ohm speakers in parallel), so you could use a dual voice coil sub to replace the two 6x9s (and then put in a pair of real 6x9s). It should be stable driving a 4 ohm load; I'll find out shortly.

I haven't had the front door panels off yet, but it looks like the 2" hole in the front actually has a 1" dome tweeter in it.

The monsoon amp is rated at 300W, but I don't know how much goes to each channel. There is supposedly a built in treble boost (17 - 20kHz) for the tweeters and a 300Hz band notch filter for the woofers (to avoid the resonance typical of a speaker mounted in a relatively large enclosure (ie door, trunk)), but I haven't independently confirmed that.

The amp has a power up line that can be tapped to activate an additional amplifier(s). The head unit only supplies line level outputs.

I don't plan on replacing the amp; it seems to be of decent quality. I'm swapping out the 6x9s and the center channel and then adding a pair of 4x6s to the cabin and a sub where the spare tire would go if the car had one. That may be too much info, but I wanted to share.

I just found out about the 9 speaker system. Crutchfield told me that GM considers the 6x9 to be 2 speakers( it's a 2 way speaker so it counts as 2 speakers). So add them up 1 dash, 4 door, rear deck counts as 2. hope this helps.

You're correct chrisp847. The 6x9s in the rear are actually two seperate speakers. There is the woofer part which is the actual 6x9 and then on top of the bracket over that one is the small, maybe 2", mid-range speaker. They are wired seperately as well. The Monsoon amp runs base to the woofer and then the mid-range sound to the smaller speaker.

Kind of symantics i suppose. I would count that as one speaker, but since they wire them seperately, I guess they are technically 2. You almost wonder if GM/Delco did that on purpose just so they could say "9 speakers" instead of "7 speakers". That's probably a bit cynical, though.

aftermarket speakers that are two way or three way only have on set of wires going to them so each speaker in them has to share the power yet the GM 6x9 speaker is dual powered so does that not make it better?

I'm not arguing that from a pure performance standpoint the factory setup isn't inherently better than having a two-way 6x9 with one power input with the same power running to it (all things remaining equal). I'm not sure that's the case though. I'm not convinced the power coming out of the factory amp isn't already split between the two outputs to the speakers and each is only really getting "half" (so to speak) anyway. Again, that's the cynic in me...

That said, I don't really have any qualms about the Monsoon Amp and the dual power setup. It's no high-output competition setup, but then I don't think anyone would say that it is. For a stock factory system, it's pretty good...imo.

My remarks were more related to the marketing of the system, not its quality.

The rear 6x9s are really are two different speakers the way that they are set up. I think it was done that way to keep the same stamping.

If want to, you can splice the wires going to the bass part of the 6x9s and drive your own sub. I tried it with an MTX 12" and it was fine, but a little boomy because of the crossover and boost in the amp. You can't drive a full range speaker with that output. You will only hear the bass.

I didn't like the way the 2" fullrange sounded. I tried connecting the fullrange channel to a regular 6x9, but there was way too much treble from the treble boost and it sounded like crap. It could have just been that the 6x9 had two tweeter sized speakers.

I ended up leaving my upgraded 6x9s in the stock location and just driving them with the bass channel from the amp. I cut two holes in the rear deck and mounted 4x6s that I had from my old car and I tied them to the fullrange channel. They sounded really good. I then added a sub by tapping the rear channel lineouts going to the amp, so I wouldn't have that crappy bass boost. Since the 6x9s handled a lot of bass, I set the crossover on the sub at 45Hz. I also replaced the factory speakers up front, and I think it sounds great with the stock head unit.
