Re: Need help with sound system for grand prix gxp
haha I forgot I made this topic. But ya if you look at my other topic I pretty much have come a decent ways since then. Still figuring a lot out but I'm confident I can actually do this and do it right now. Planning on finally installing in a couple weeks with a few buddies.
Here's what I ended up getting:
Headunit: Kenwood KDC x794
Front Speakers: Hertz HSK 165
Rear Speakers: Disconnected
Speaker Amp: JL 300/4
Subwoofer: Fi Q 12"
Sub Amp: Audioque 1200D
Sound Deadening: 37.5 sq ft raammat (just doing front doors and trunk lid for now)
Wires: RCAs, Speaker Wire, dual amp kit all from knukoncepts cause they have pretty good stuff and I didn't feel like looking anywhere else lol
Total ended up being around $1500 but that was kind of what my new limit for myself ended up being so it worked out perfectly.
I will also be making a sub box and fiberglass mounting my tweeters in the A-pillar.
The main question I got left is where can I find fabric to finish the sub box with.... and what should I finish the A-pillar with? Paint? if so what would you recommend?
Oh also, whats the easiest way to run wires down to the trunk? and how should I seperate them as in what should be tied together and what should be kept apart?

What did you get for a 4-channel amp? Seems like it's going to be a quite nice setup!

I'm actually bridging the channels together (150 rms) for my hertz speakers (125 rms).
and thanks man! I hope it turns out. I've definitely done a lot of learning over the past month and a half.

Nice, i've got a jl 320.4 in my truck and love it. I'm still learning, and i've been into this for the last 2 years. Nice to have another stereo guy around here.

For the box covering contact your nearby car audio shop. I guarantee you can get some from them, otherwise you can order charcoal carpet from crutchfield or pick up the cheap stuff from walmart though it doesn't match.
Puting it onto the box is as simple as buying multipurpose spray adhesive in a can, theres alot of different brandss and i dunno whats best. I've been using the 3M stuff and its never given me issues even when i used leather. Just make sure you give it a few seconds to tack up on both sides before you put it together.
As for the fiberglass most hardware stores sell fiberglass matt and resin you just have to ask where its at. If the one near you doesn't, yet again head to your local audio shop. Otherwise you can order it online like everything else.
For finishing off the pillars you can use regular body filler to smooth it out a bit. Then you can use the textured interior paint that o'reily auto parts sell. Just make sure to take your time with that paint.

I have even gone so far as to make sure of some of my ideas by posting them on here before i start purchasing just to make sure it will look and sound good once i'm finished.
You won't have to buy the nicest speakers and subs out there. You especially wont need to go as far as JL audio components and speakers. Great quality stuff but it'll cost you an arm and a leg and if you don't install it right it'll sound just the same as any other driver of its size. Pick out a budget and do what you think is best. Begin discussing whether or not you want to do stock sized speakers, or over sized speakers like 6.5's in the doors or running an amplifier to the speakers and things like that.
Once you have an idea of what direction you want to go with the car and what budget you have given yourself the forum as a whole can help you a whole lot more. Theres a lot of good audio products, perhaps to many, so your going to have to narrow down what you want use to help you with.
Due to a car environment, you'll never be able to fully analyze the potential of your design and placement. All you can really do is "test" locations and cross over points in real time. Once you've nailed cross over points, tonality can be much simpler than people expect. But at that point it's best to have an RTA and equalizer. People don't always properly perceive what they hear. A problem at 8khz could be solved by adding at 16khz. But because our vehicle environment is imperfect we won't know until the before/after measurements are compared.
Even our measely phones can act as an RTA these days ;)
