I put a nice HUMount in my 2000 GTP (I was the original poster of this thread), anyway, my 16 year old daughter totally my car a week ago and tomorrow I am going to the auto shop and pulling the head unit, HUMount, sub, speakers, steering wheel control module, intake, plog, chrome grills, etc...

The HUMount is sweet and I just dropped about $100 on it so there was no way that the insurance/salvage company were getting it. It looks like I will end up with an '05 or '06 GT, so I'll probably put some of that all up on the for sale section here.

Yeah, it looks like the steering wheel module may not work with the 2005 or 2006 Grand Prix that I am looking at, and they don't make HUMounts for the newer Prix models...

I pulled it all out today.... In the rain.... And it was 45F out... At least the inside of the car was dry! I thought that I better get some pictures before I took the stereo out.

Below is what a (my) HUMount looks like with the headlights off, then what it looks like during the day if you have your headlights on (which triggers the HUMount light), and lastly what it looks like at night with lights on of course.

Does anyone know of any other custom install kits? I would like something that is not the standard blah, and although those kits look sweet, they are a little spendy. Anyone make custom kits? I have seen a few posts where people made their own, but they were either too wild for me or the picture links were no longer working, etc.

I have not really found many other options out there, so let me know if there are any other options or if there is a good write up on how to make my own custom one.

I am not so much worried about getting it flush (although I will look into sawing it back there to see if I can get it looking better), but I am more just looking for a custom bezel piece that goes around the stereo itself. You can get the standard one for like $10-20, but it just looks plain to me. But the humount is the only thing I have really seen for a custom one, and the price is like 5 times more than the standard.

It doesn't seem like it would be hard to make one. Is there a write up any where on doing this?

I don't remember seeing any "standard" ones that went flush. The bezels that come from places like Crutchfield and the like where they are specific for the car make the head unit stick out almost 1 inch. My wife even thought that it looked like crap, thus the reason I went with the HUMount. It was pricey (mine cost me $100 shipped to my door), but you don't HAVE to get one that lights up and save $15-$20, and you don't HAVE to get the extra writing on the ring that goes around the head unit opening, etc. You can save a few bucks that way. Not sure, but if they are using a CNC machine to carve/cut these, I would think that they could do something custom, but it will cost even more.

they are pretty amazing looking though!

honestly after seeing the HUmount in person, its not that hard to make a copy of the design and then you can use whatever material and style you want.

That is what I figured, but I have not seen one in person and I can't seem to find a write up of how to do it. Would love to see a good write up with pics on a custom piece anyone has done.

use the head unit mount from crutchfield. there's two pieces, you only need the main rectangular one.

    remove factory radio.
dremel out the little piece of metal/sub-frame/dashboard directly behind the head unit
put new head unit in said rectangular piece. (it will sit flush)
install, put your four screws in, add dash piece.

FLUSH. if it weren't -500* outside, i'd go take pictures. if you can't figure it out, you don't deserve a flush receiver.

    97 GT - slow, rusty
93 CTD - more slow, less rust

I am not as worried about getting it flush. I do like the flush look better, but I mainly want a bezel/dash kit that looks nice--as in not the standard plain black cheap plastic looking thing, but I can't spend a fortune on it.

I have also seen some that have a little pocket right under the stereo. It would make sense that this type would have the stereo raised up a little higher than one that mounts it right in the middle with gobs of cheap plastic on top and bottom of the stereo. Anyone know if this type of set up puts the stereo high enough to clear the brace in the dash so you could mount it further back without cutting?
