I have a 97 grand prix and the display on the tape deck went out, so i was thinking about just swapping the tape deck for a cd deck from a junkyard,
will the steering wheel controls still work if i do this?

as long as it's a stock deck and the connections are there i beleive it should
yeah i'm thinking if its the factory CD deck then yea, should...
This swap you are talking about *will* work. You just need to make sure you obtain a "family radio" (the CD player will look very similar to the tape player you are removing) out of another Pontiac car, specifically out of a Grand Prix (duh), Firebird, Grand Am, or Sunfire. The Trans Sports will have radios similar in appearance but the brackets will not fit in a Grand Prix. Another alternative is to simply repair the display issue you are having. This is a very common issue in the Pontiac family radios with LCDs. The "service light" behind the LCD is notorious for backing off of its ground in the circuit board. These lights don't tend to burn out, they just basically loosen and open the circuit. I'm sure there is a how-to article on this site on LCD repair.
