Ok so about four months ago i got into my 04 gtp, and noticed that my heads up display was no longer displaying. a while later I started cleaning out my car and noticed that it was in fact still working but had some how managed to get all the way up to the top of the window, or as high as it would go. I tried to hit the button to bring it back down and for some reason it seems to be the only button on that console control that doesn't work. Every other button works just fine, except for adjusting the height back down.

I took it to the stealership and they told me that since i have a after market stereo that it caused some sort of voltage spike that fried the heads up display unit. but it all still works except one button. I have a back ground in Electronics and have been an Electronic's technician in the navy for 4.5 years. Everything i have learned tells me that this is impossible. And I don't know where else to turn for help. Stealership wants 850 bucks to fix it. Any help?

Hi John, The exact same thing happened to me yesterday! I got in my car and my HUD was gone. After closer inspection i realized that is was up to high to see. Have you figured out how to fix the problem?

I found out what the problem is and how to fix it! Apparently there is a small spring that connects to a plastic piece on the HUD. Over time the plastic may break leaving the spring lose in the hud. To fix it, take out the HUD and drill a new hole in the plastic for the spring to connect to. This should fix the problem.

Yeah, I'm wondering how exactly you did it because I'm facing the same issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here is a quote from an article I found:

    "Pontiac Heads Up Display problem
I just fixed my wife’s heads up display in her 2004 Pontiac GT2. I thought it wasn't working, but realized that if I slumped way down in the seat and looked through the steering wheel it was projecting. It was just way out of line.
A close up look through the front windshield showed a loose spring in the display. When I rocked the car, the spring moved freely. I took the dash apart and pulled out the Heads Up Display. Upon opening the HUD I noticed that the small plastic piece that held the spring down was broke. I drilled a new hole in some plastic nearby and connected the spring. I put everything back together and it worked perfectly.
It took me about two hours to remove, fix, and install, but i work on cars often. It was a lot easier that I thought it was going to be."
For details on removing the Heads Up Display, go to the following link.

Alright what rianna is saying is true. I plan on tearing mine out of the dash this weekend and i want to take a bunch of pictures and do a write up on it to post here on the forums. from what i have seen its a horrible problem with a lot of the heads up displays that are pretty easy to fix. Just hard to get into. Any who if you have any questions pm me. And hopefully in the next couple weeks keep your eyes peeled for the write up.

Also, a friend of mine spent a lot of time putting these instructions together. Any donations would be helpful!
    Thanks!

Rianna's friend has a great procedure for fixing it; I just did it myself in about an hour and a half! Stealership claimed that the HUD was a "factory-sealed module" that could not be repaired, only replaced, and that for $915...this after charging me $260 to completely dismantle the dash and put it back together again...I'm going to Jiffy Lube next time I need my oil changed, and every time after that.

But my HUD works now! And I did it myself, which is pretty awesome for someone who barely knows which end of a ratchet goes "ratch". (And I left a donation.)

Unfortunately, my story doesn't have a completely happy ending: http://www.flickr.com/photos/28516970@N07/3708963042/

(My dash panel had already cracked in several places, so this wasn't really a surprise. Pissed me off, though.)

    *******

This is something that's probably going to happen to anyone with the HUD, sooner or later. The block where the spring attaches to the HUD housing is very soft plastic; I didn't even need a power drill to put a hole in it, I just used a pin vise. You could clearly see how the spring had sawn through the plastic. If you know people who have this HUD, this thread is a good thing to show them!
