I am in the process of a complete restoration of my GTP inside and out, and I thought in the interest of saving a little time I would order the custom made double din dash from...the only place online I found that sells them, I wont name any names here.

After 113 days and a phone call bi-weekly after the 8-10 week period I expected, I received my new dash. No vents, that are plastic welded in, no steering column rubber gasket thing also plastic welded in. A pretty rough re-texture job, and a partial respray with a bad color match and obvious tape masking lines. I figured the usual "We make it, you make it work!" as most aftermarket stuff seems to be these days. I pulled the dash apart and snapped it in just to see and I get this....http://i.imgur.com/puErICY.jpg

So I had to make the heater control a little thinner overall. I started by trimming an 1/8th of an inch off both the top and bottom of the HVAC, and shaving the guide pins. Then elongating the mount holes to move the entire control down, I gained the needed 1/4 of an inch.

Then it looked like this http://i.imgur.com/2bgkRVy.jpg You can see the rough texture but now the hole is the right size.

So then I painted it body color and cleared it and crammed a Kenwood double din in it!

Far too much for what it is....

It sat outside for a year in the sun while I was hospitalized back in 09, and the sun destroyed the paint and window trims.

My plan last Fall was to just fix the paint and body but I got a little carried away as it came apart and more and more wear and tear was noticed.
So now its, paint, body, hood, bumper, lights, leds, carpet, dynamat, all new speakers, subs and amps, tint, suspension, wheels, tires ect...
Not sure on the total cost, kinda don't really want to add it all up. However in about another 3-4 weeks I should have it all done. Then i'll have a brand new 16 year old car.

Ill do a couple build log type posts here soon enough.

A while back we discussed carpet. How did that turn out for you? Still haven't done mine, not that my car has been sitting, just doing other things to it right now. Any tips/ suggestions?

Replacement carpet was a 2 day thing for myself and another guy who has done a few times in older 50s-70s cars. Stacking and gluing jute and neoprene in place measuring several times before cutting. It's sort of a process, I wouldn't recommend replacement unless it's absolutely necessary or really desired. Then even if you spend days on it still wont be 100% perfect.

Did you have to do any work to the inner dash structure to get a double din to fit? I can't remember how much room there is. I put my single din Alpine in almost 6 years ago and I just don't remember what it looks like back there. Thinkin about going to a new double din Alpine.
