Thread: Service Vehicle Soon (but no check engine light)

So over the weekend I fixed the evap vent solenoid



Now I have a new issue, Saturday night the car cut out on me on the freeway. The motor just cut out and I coasted to the side. Once I got to the side, I had no check engine light or anything. I sat there for 2 hours, i put more gas in the car (just to be sure) and it started up. There was gas in the car though...

Sunday, I rode around trying to make the issue happen again as I was better prepared to deal with it. Car rode like a champ. Today, on my way to work, Service Vehicle Soon popped up but no check engine light. Several questions:

1. When this pops up on the DIC, is there a code I can read if there is no check engine light?

2. When changing the evap solenoid, was there something else I should had done as well?

3. Oil percentage is at 18% (I changed the oil but never reset the percentage),

4. Should I put the old evap solenoid back on there and right with the check engine light on to see if that is the issue? (I never had this problem until I changed the solenoid)

svs is the cars body saying theres a problem, nothing should be affected engine wise when the svs light comes on.

any chance did the abs and trac off lights come on when the svs light came on? if so you got a abs issue aka hub or something like that.


what code did you have that lead you to the evap purge solenoid change?


that stalling for no reason seems like a crank sensor. or it lost fuel pressure.

No Trac control light or ABS came on. Just the SVS then it dissappeared.. It came on again about five minutes later..

Code that led me to change that part was p0449. I researched here and figured out that was the part. My check engine light was on and has since went out and my gas mileage is back to roughly 18 mpg.

That stall was the first time it did that and it's just ironic it did that after I changed that part. If that were to be the case that it was one of those issues, would it throw a code?

the crank sensor hardly ever sets a code, the fuel pump does not set a code either.

best to pressure test the pump, and if you notice the tach dropping to zero before it stalls, thats the typical crank sensor failure.

Question: Is the crank position sensor something I can easily get to? I am trying to fix things on my own. If so, where should I look?

its not the worst, not the easiest job to do, but can be done with hand tools. you'll need a puller and the right bolts for your balancer, the bolts should be listed in this how to. http://www.grandprixforums.net/showt...e+crank+sensor

id be testing the fuel pump, (if that checks out) then watch how it acts over the next few days for the tach to drop before it stalls. if that starts to happen its the crank sensor for sure.

So start with testing the fuel pump, gotcha! Will go do that after work... Is it true the fuel pressure should not be under 40 psi?

Doesnt solve the stalling problem, but check all of your lights (headlights, turn signals, etc) having a turn signal out was the only time Ive ever seen SVS on my car without also having the ABS or Trac lights go too.

My old Grand Am was that way too, lost a brake light and it set off the SVS light.

good call on the svs, theres not a whole lot of common things that make that light go off.

and you want to see over 40 psi. before it starts, key just to run, and after it starts both tests over 40 psi or somethings not right.

Okay... I checked headlights, turn signals, brake lights etc. All working and fine. Question: I should get the ABS and Trac lights as soon as I get the SVS light correct? They should all come on together (back to back)? Or after the car stalls will I get these lights?

if you had say a bad hub or bad wires to the abs, the abs or the trac off lights would come on both or just one sometimes, and the svs light would come on at the same time.

you need a real scanner to read what ever code its putting out, dealer or good garage.

3 rd brake light working? both bulbs?

Good call, will have to check the third brake light... I really appreciate you guys.. I will update later when someone gets home to press the brake for me...

i use my pry bar on the pedal and to the floor mat. or i back up to some large glass windows and look in the rear view mirror at the lights reflections.

i work alone way to much.

Update: The car has not stalled anymore. I am noticing I am getting the SVS light at night or in my parking structure... Normally when the headlights turn on (or soon after). I am gonna go get this checked out as all the lights on the car are fine

One other thing to consider. Check your battery connections. the 04+ connections don't impress me at all.

@BillBoost37... You make a valid point. When I changed that evap solenoid, I had to disconnect the battery. I really dislike the positive terminal on the battery. There was a lot of corrosion and gunk on it, not to mention, the setup is weird. I will work to clean that better tonight... Thanks!
