I swapped a powertrain out of a 2005 GXP into a Pontiac Fiero. During the swap, I partially disassembled the engine and took some pictures. I posted these pictures to the following webpage along with some information...

    GM LS4 V8 / 4T65E INFO

You can see a write-up of the Fiero swap here:

That thermostat housing doesnt look fun to play with. Also I have a few questions.

    1. What is a TCM?
    2. Are any of the components/parts etc. on that motor beefed up and transferable to the L67 platform?
    3. Is that an engine stand you are using to hold that transmission?

    Sorry for all the questions.

Great documentation on the whole thing though, hats off to you for that.

Scotty those cars use a TCM, Trans Control Module as they are not all one unit as the 3800 cars are/were. The car runs awesome and I think I know who worked on the trans I will let Ryan finish the rest of your questions

Ive been on the look out for one around here in fact as a project car. I owned one several years ago, but it was the 2M4. I enjoyed it nonetheless though. It was a fun car to drive.

    Thanks for the props.

    1) AFAIK, starting in 2005 GM went to splitting up the transmission computer from the engine computer instead of having it in one unit. In some applications, the transmission control module is actually located inside the transmission.

    2) The LS4 is completely different from the 3800. I don't think there is anything on it that could be used on the 3800.

    3) Yes that is an engine stand I used to hold the transmission. Works quite well.

well, which would be the simplest....

    1. LS6 laying in my garage
    2. 3.8L SC laying in my garage
    3. 500BBC down in storage with a transverse TH400......

let me know which one you want to tackle...

Honestly? #2 wins hands down, IMHO. And let me tell you why.

I wouldn't even consider #3 to be an option because you would basically need to rebuild the vehicle from the ground-up to make it a front-engine, rear drive car in order to use the TH400 and BBC. By the time you do that, you won't have what I consider to be a "real" Fiero anymore. One of the things that makes the Fiero unique is the mid-engine, rear drive configuration.

#1 option is going to cost you quite a bit of coin just to get the engine in the car using a FWD-type transaxle (because of all the special adapters and custom pieces you will need). Then space is going to be at a premium in the already tight Fiero engine compartment. In addition, you won't have room to run the exhaust system the LS6 needs to breathe without cutting out the trunk. But I guess if you don't care about all of this, then this swap would be an option you could consider.

The L67 fits in the Fiero engine bay really well. It bolts right up to all of the popular FWD transaxles that can be used in the Fiero, and as you know the L67 can be built up to make an insane amount of power reliably.

I guess it all depends on what you want out of the car.
