cleared the code with reader and comes back after 20 miles or so. gets same mpg. no noise from engine like cam chain or something like that wrong. i looked code up and is a mismatch signal from cam sensor and the crank sensor. any way to tell which one or look at cam chain to see if getting stretched and needing replaced? any help appreciated. dealers i called were not much help.

Highly unlikely that the LS V8 chain has stretched alot, they rarely if ever cause issues. Never heard of one even jumping time nor has the tone ring on the crank or cam gear ever been a problem.
I would inspect both the cam and crank sensors, check wiring to both and make sure that is alright. I would even try a crank learn to re-sync the sensors together and see what it does. Seems like replacing one or the other would be the next step and doing a crank learn after too.

It's likely if the tensioner failed. Spring guide style for the 07+ guys. You should be hearing a audible noise from the front of the motor if that's the case other wise try the above advise

it has 95k on it. so thats why i wouldnt think to be the chain. how would you go about the crank learn re-sync? and no noise from engine at all. i have a lot of engine experience work at jd dealer for 10+ years and work on all of my own cars and trucks. is the wifes car and she took to dealer and they said 3k to fix and should just trade it. so to me its probably something simple instead of cam chain since it is spring tensioned instead of old style gm products.

If this were a 3.8 I'd say pull the crank sensor and at the least clean or replace it while you are checking wiring to ensure nothing got nicked etc.
The crank sensor on a 3.8 is magnetic and over time can pick stuff up that will cause it to be pissy. Heck.. my Audi recently tossed a cam sensor code (there's 4 fwiw) and sure enough there was the typical layer of stuff on the magnetic sensor.
