Well, folks... The GTP is out of order as of about an hour and a half ago (midnight here). I was getting frustrated with my computer, so decided to grab the laptop and go for a drive and see how my car likes the 9* weather here. I drove around just cruising, rapping the throttle a few times just to get some numbers. I drove around for a little over a half hour, then stopped to fill up at the only station in the area with 93 octane. on the way back home, I got on the interstate and floored it just for the heck of it. At the top of second it hesitated a slight bit, then shifted with a loud sound after I let off the gas. A few seconds later, I hear the car cough a little, then it starts to sputter and act up. I bump it into neutral and touched the gas to keep it from dieing. I managed to get it to the next off ramp (only a few hundred feet away at the time), then it dies completely. I rolled through the stop sign and get it straightened back up (30 MPH) and try to start it. Nothing... So I stop in the painted median between lanes. I get out and check all around the car with a flashlight. No liquids or parts hanging down from the engine bay. My next thought is the (almost new) timing chain broke. I popped the oil filler and watch as my buddy, who was riding shotgun, cranked the car. The valve are moving like normal, so I believe the chain is still in tact (It may have somehow jumped a tooth or two. I am still on a single chain.). I had full oil pressure while the car was still running, so I don't think I screwed up anything internal.

It's 9* outside and my roommate is on his way, so Kyle and I decide we're going to push the car out of the middle of the street and into a neighborhood half a block away. Luckily, one of the local Honda guys drives by and stops to help out. Well, since there were not three of us to push my 2-ton boat down the street, we decided to go ahead an push it another block up into a Basset parking lot.

By now, I'm coughing my head off and so are the other two guys. I'm not about to spend another half hour or so troubleshooting the stupid thing in this cold weather. My roommate show up, finally, in his 260Z and totes all of us back to this dude's Honda. Kyle rode with the Honda guy (Never caught his name, but he's on the local board, so I'll have to thank him via NWAI.), and I rode with Chris, my roommate, back to our house, where we thanked Mr. Honda Driver and Kyle for helping push the car and promptly went inside for the night.

So, now my GP is sitting in a parking lot, unable to run for an unknown reason, and I think I may have pneumonia (or at least a very nasty cold). Oh yea, at least I got my computer running decent again...

Cliff Notes: Uhhhh.... my car is screwed up and won't start/run and I'm sick. My computer is, however, working properly, again.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm out of cash for about a week, too... Anyone wanna donate to the "Fix Dan's Car" fund??

did it make any screeching sounds? how was your oil pressure? any coolant in the oil?

after i spun a bearing in my car it would die randomly and it would barely stay running. i couldnt start it after i brought it home in the trailer either.

No screeching. Good oil pressure, although it was bouncy while the car was trying to die. The coolant and oil both looked pretty good. This just happened suddenly without warning. I'm going back out to the car today to do the basic diagnostic tests. I'm going to check the fuel pump electrical stuff and the pressure. I may also get a cylinder pressure tester borrowed and out there as a last resort. What else can I check, in the middle of a snowy parking lot, that would keep it from running?

    Gee... Thanks!
I'm almost gonna say fuel pump or something related to that. It IS the original one from the factory. It chugged when I tried to restart it, but didn't even act like it might start. I was too cold to bother even checking if I had fuel in the rail or if the pump was whining. By that time my face and hands were so cold I couldn't feel them.

yeah, if everything checks out engine wise then youre either missing fuel or spark. if it turns over and your plugs and wires are good i could see it being a fuel pump, but usually they dont just up and die like that.

Relay or resistor, maybe? That's what I'm hoping for.

its possible. can't you bypass that by bending one of the relay legs or something?

yup. I just haven't done it yet. I'm just waiting until noon so Kyle can come pick me up and take me out to my car. I'd walk or bike there, but it's like 5 miles away and still cold as ballz outside!

I've got two people on the way over here to help out. I'm taking my computer and a tool bag to see if there's anything I can do there. Wish me luck.

Yup! It's dead! #1 spark plug tip looks like a pretzel. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but something in the #1 cylinder is FUBAR. I'm headed back out there to throw a plug in the #1 hole and see if I can limp her home.

Let me make a correction to the above statement. The plugs from cylinders 1, 2, and 4 look like pretzels. I put some old plugs back in place of the dead ones and fired the car up. It actually caught and ran. I managed to limp it to my house (against my better judgment, but I did it anyway). I have some stuff to take care of on campus, then after that, I'll start tearing it down to find the true problem. My guess is the new tensioner broke, the chain jumped time and I bent a few valves. This sucks!

hope for the valves, prepare for the chipped pistons. do a compression test before you tear everything apart. if it passes with 120psi, do a leakdown test and see if the tops of the pistons are chipped

I'm pulling her into the garage in just a little bit to start the diagnosis. IF for some reason the timing chain is off by a tooth, will that mess up my compression reading?

no, compression is how much is in the cylinder, the crank will still push the rod up
