Crank walk?

Ok so as most of you know I recently comverted my 04 grand prix to 5 speed. I also grind going into gears. I narrowed it down to not being a syncro issue due to the fact that it grind while parked with my clutch in for minutes. This tells me there is a release issue. So my first instinct is to replace the 23 year old master and slave. Ordered new ones, replaced and same issue.

Next I thought maby I didn't grease the fork and throw out bearing enough. Upon pulling the trans I noticed there was wear marks on the inside of the trans telling me the pressure plate is hitting and causing the clutch to not release properly. My first thought is that the machinist did not grind the flywheel properly thus causing the pressure plate to sit out to far so it hit and also so the disc couldn't release enough to disengage the clutch. So I checked the measurements on the disc and the flywheel and they are dead on. So my next thought is the crank is either walking or the crank sits out farther on the series 3 then the series 2 which if that's the case I can machine the flywheel the extra few thou and be ok. ill post pictures.

You can see here where the fingers were hitting to the left center of the input shaft

Here you can see that those studs were hitting the that far left side of the case

I did a little bit of checking and a few major parts warehouses lists the same part# as a replacement crank for either 2004 or a 2000 ..i'll keep digging

if your gut instinct is to have the flywheel machined, atleast you could shim it back.

It's definitely a flywheel issue...hence why I said to get one for a 3800 swapped Fiero.

Flywheel is at .840, that is the correct thickness

I rarely see any more than .010 on crank end play and that's usually a cold high mile engine.
the worst I've seen was an 06 l26 that is currently sitting ready for the 442 and it was at nearly 020 because someone did not fully seat the converter onto the splines and f*** the trans and wore the thrust bearing

run a dial indicator across the face as you turn the crankshaft and make sure your parallel and perpendicular to the crank

I rechecked my measurements and I hope your right, This was my first thought when I seen those wear marks. Im waiting for the machine shop across the street to recheck because im using a semi straight piece of steel stock to check with a caliper lol. I might be .030 off if my last measurments are correct.

Well i checked and sure enough .032 over. I am so pissed at this guy. I told him it was crucial it HAD to be .840 from the crank mounting surface to the face. He ended up bringing it to a machine shop across town without telling me and then calls me witha bill of $200 to cover his charge from the other machine shop. Now god only knows the condition of my syncros and clutch/throwout bearing, or input shaft due to the vibration from hitting the trans casing. Word of advice always double check someone elses work. I had so many things going on in my head with the swap i took his word for it and didnt check the measurements. fml

Oh not to mention my bank account was compromised yesterday was completely emptied and takes atleast a couple weeks to to take care of.

Omg I want a five speed now! How did you do it I have an 04 n/a and would love nothing better then to be back in a stick!!!!!

Its just a bolt on mod. Nothing to it.

Shayne, the funny thing is if you look through my build thread (on page 3 or 4 I think it was) you would've seen the exact same thing lol. Literally almost a 1/4" gets taken off the flywheel. It probably didn't hurt anything though so you should be safe.

Also, if all else fails, find a Getrag 282 flywheel and measure the thickness...there's almost nothing to it.

All you need is to grab a couple 30 racks from your local package store, and get black out drunk. You will wake up and your car will be 5 speed.

Perks of working at a parts store. Ill have a 282 flywheel in tomarrow and ill bring it to the machine shop. COPY THIS......

Cost is not the factor, chances are you will never find a donor car and i only know of a couple more complete 284s left in the country. But i spent roughly $2,000+
