Starting to look for an engine to go in an 04 GTP, looking for a L32 (what was in it).

My options can't only be other 04 GTP's? I'm not understanding why when I search car-part.com, the only results I get are ONLY other 04 grand prix. I've tested other year and model vehicles so I know their system is set up to show all useable year/model results.

What vehicles/years came with 3800 series 3 supercharged engines (L32) that I can search for that will work in a GTP and why don't I get those results when searching car-part.com? Just wanting to expand my search options to see what all is out there for L32's that will work.

I tried their VIN search, but says my vin is invalid

look for a l67, its a sc'ed 97-03 engine, both are getting harder to find. so if your heads are still good you can buy a n/a engine and use your heads lim and blower on the n/a block, its a bottom swap in your case. it will need the pcm tuned for this and if you dont have headers it helps to have them on a hi compression block.

Yeah, read all about the swap but don't think it's for me. Not sure about the condition of the heads currently, plus the cost of new gaskets, bolts, and the time in swapping and sealing everything from the heads up and I'm not familiar with tunes so not sure I want to deal with that. I've thought about it, read about it, but with needing new bolts and gaskets, plus the amount of time involved in swapping everything, plus I'm totally unfamiliar with tunes I'm not so sure that it's a wise choice for me. Will be paying someone to work along side of me so the time involved in swapping would add up. Anyone looking for some extra money in Michigan?

I'll look into the L67 suggestion some more, but when I just peeked, they don't seem to be much cheaper if at all than the L32's I've seen. Any feedback on how I can expand my search for L32's beyond the 04 GTP results I've been getting? That can't be the only year and model that has an L32 that would fit in the Grand prix....can it? If the prices are comparable I would just as much choose the L32.

I doubt he wants to get into that garbage of swapping a different motor and having to get a tune and having to buy extra parts and do extra things to make it work.

To answer your question, the L32 is still a series 2 block (they all are), just the piston/rods are made different among a few other very minor changes.

So either look for a L32 or find a L67 from the previous gen (97-03). Remember they came in park ave, bonnevilles, regals and monte carlo's too. That way all you have to do is swap your intake manifold and supercharger over with a few gaskets and you are good to go.

    L32's are in 04-05 GTP's and 06-07 GT's. 2008 dropped the supercharged engine.

okay, so if correct, the way I understand it is the 05-07 L32 is not a direct interchange with an 04 because of the change from steel oil pan to aluminum and a problem with a change in the mount . To correct this all I need is a mount bracket from an 05-07 grand prix part # 10345562. Is this correct? By switching the old mount bracket to the new mount bracket, an 05-07 L32 with the aluminum oil pan would now be interchangeable into my 04 Grand Prix that currently has the steel oil pan?

I've also read something about possibly having to grind off something on the frame when switching oil pans. Is that going to apply in my situation or was it for different years and doesn't apply for me? Can't find the post I originally read regarding this.

if you have a al pan you can swap it. if you have a the u bracket old style it can be used as well with no issues. if the pan looks wet on the used engine id do the swap, or get a new gasket. al pan uses no gasket, just grey rtv.

edit: if you swap pans you also swap the oil pick up.

If you use the aluminum pan, you'll need the pickup tube for it as well, like $15 shipped on ebay. Pre '04's have to replace the lower engine mount bracket as well, not sure what's on yours.

Sorry, not sure I am completely understanding what your saying. Car currently has an engine that has the black steel oil pan. Based on price, distance, and mileage of engines on the market, I'm looking at using an engine from an 06 that from my understanding will be with an aluminum oil pan. From what I understand the steel oil pan and the aluminum pan would require different mount brackets.

Just trying to make sure I have the details figured out, and if I need parts to make the above kind of swap that I have parts ordered before getting stuck in the middle of the project.

if you have a al pan you can swap it. if you have a the u bracket old style it can be used as well with no issues.
This reads to me that I do not need a different bracket mount to make the switch, which goes against what I thought I understood.

I'm not switching oil pans so no need to switch pick ups, I want to install an engine that comes with an aluminum pan into a car that currently has an engine with the steel pan. To do this I thought I just needed to replace the old mount bracket with a new mount bracket designed for the aluminum pan? I've read so many posts, I may be mixing information up, so I'm just trying to get the details sorted before hand.

I may have misunderstood, if you're installing the engine that came with the aluminum pan, then yeah you're good to go as far as the pickup. I don't know how the mount/cradle setup is on the '04 w/steel pan so I have no idea what you'll need as far as that goes. If you do need the other style bracket, the part number is in the thread I linked, $13 or so at the dealer. You'll know pretty quick if you try putting your old bracket on the new engine which one you need.

that al pan and the motor mount will work just fin in your steel sub frame. people swap to al pans all the time. its the same motor mount too. you can use your old one if the new engine dont come with it.

when you get your engine you just swap your parts for any parts that dont plug in, like the intake and throttle body, or any other sensor that dont have the same plug.
