    ive researched doing a cam install, and decided it would be easiest to lower the engine/transmission down enough to get access to the front cover. But, I am also installing a set of ported heads so my question is, how much more work is it to just drop the entire engine and transmission to work on without having to lean over anything. is the extra labor of removing the engine and transmission from the car going to justify itself because of the ease of access?

    you could just take the engine out so much quicker.

    98 Buick Regal GS, F body brakes, Caddy STS wheels, tinted tails L36 bottom end, lightly ported heads, 1.95 roller rockers, headers, gen 5 N* 3.0 pulley, FSIC, 42 lb injectors, a BrandonHall rebuilt trans, DHP tuned and AEM water/Meth injection https://goo.gl/gpV5kW

    take the engine out the top or lower the eng/trans on the cradle?

    engine out the top. put it on a engine stand, enjoy the freedom of walking and working around it.

    Pssh drop the passenger side of the subframe a bit and remove the HB/timing cover.. No need to worry about extracting the freon and can easily be done withing a few hours.

    But now that I think about it might be easier to pull the motor and go ahead and change the rear main seal and address the often leaky oil pan

    I'm just going to let the mechanic decide. there are pro's and con's to either method. I'm just trying to gather information to help him decide. I'm going to drop it off on monday, a week from today, and if he has time to get started on it that day or the next day I can help him by taking the top stuff off and putting the new heads on.

    #1 why is someone else doing the work?
    #2 out the bottom if its on a lift.
    #3 out the top if you don't have a lift.
    #4 disconnect ps pump and Ac pump leave the lines for each connected. AC does not need to be recharged. Ive don't plenty engine and trans swaps not a single time ac had to be messed with.
    #5 do the rearmain and pan gasket while its out, cheap piece of mind.
    #6 um please explain #1 to me again, your easily going to double the cost of this project with labor cost......
    #7 IMO id rather screw up my own car rather than blame someone else LOL!!

    I really really hate working on my car. the mechanic that will do it will get it done much faster than I will be able to, and he dosent charge much because I get the friends/military discount. I also dont have all the tools I would need to get the job done.

    When you are doing heads, I would just pull the motor.

    Pulling the motor is going to make life a trillion times easier.

    And that is surveyed statistics according to the reading of GPF, chapter 12, verse 3-5.

    Really? Swapping heads was fairly easy with the motor in the car.

    Leaning over the fenders for a couple hours scraping headgaskets and cleaning bolt holes is pretty hard on the knees and back.
