Re: About to make intake, 3" or 4" piping?
Yea the heat would soften up the coupler as you drive it so you definitely need to tighten it for a bit every now and then like you said. And I've always used k&n too. Been though the over-oiling bit but you learn not to go overkill lol
As a charge pipe, does it make any difference though? I would have though it would just be more turbulence being thrown up and down in size so much

none of that matters as you cant out flow the stock box, but anything with smooth turns has got to be better then stock.
so 3 inch street pipe will do just fine.

It's not going to create turbulence by going from 4" down to 3", it will theoretically increase velocity.

With the TB being around 3" I would think that would be the max beneficial size. Maybe I need to break out the tape measure and if it's over 3" a bit I could try 4" piping

It is over 3 but not by much.

Re: About to make intake, 3" or 4" piping?
if you take the pvc pipe and hold it to the tb screen, it fits just inside the lip of the TB. so its MM larger, maybe 3 mm's around the edges.

With a charge pipe you always have more air than you need, which is not a bad thing.
