Probably some type of sound baffle for keeping engine noise down

    Because 97-98 intake.

It's a baffle, and thats it. Reduce intake noise.

i had that same intake. i took it out and ran a open cone filter.

some cars if the baffle thing is on the bottom its a place for water to go before it gets to the intake, should you hit deep water.

im the 9 th owner, so who knows. the tranny took a crap at 216,000. it seems like it could be cause inside looked like it never got a regular oil change in the last 7 owners at least.

Scottydoggs I was reading that with these air boxes gm rated the na engine at 195 and sc at 235 because of the restrictive air flow and that's why they made them better and the coolant tank stayed hotter in the location it was in so they moved it to the strut tower so I'm getting the 99+ box and tank and since the studs aren't there for the tank I'm going to use self tapping screws there and call it a day also I took it off today which is a sob I found a ton of leaves and a oil bottle lid,I figured a critter stayed there while it wasn't drove
