I honestly would go big, or not bother at all.

That being said, I have a cam very similar to the S2X (though it has .010 more exhaust lift)

I love it. Stock idle tables it sounded good, had a great lope to it, but would sort of chug if just put in gear and didn't give it any gas.

Raised the idle up 100rpm, lost some of the lope, but is plenty streetable, gas mileage didn't change much at all, and it makes damn good power (revving mine to 6500)

    Pros to the VS:
Smaller cam which requires less effort to run
Can usually find one used for cheap *which is because most people end up going to a bigger cam*

    Cons to the VS:
Smaller cam so it doesn't quite have the HP potential of bigger cams
Usually will leave you wanting to go to a bigger cam
*IMO you should be replacing the seals, springs, and timing chain/dampener anyways, so it isn't really any cheaper*

    Pros to the XP/S1x/S2x:
Larger cam, has more potential to make more power
Give the car a more aggressive idle (depending on idle RPM)
    Larger powerband

    Cons:
    Slightly lower gas mileage
Possibly more expensive depending on what supporting mods you choose
Not *AS* streetable (depends on tuning and driving habits)
Will leave you wanting to get an even bigger cam and pretend you're a cammed V8

My opinion is, run the biggest cam you can afford, you don't really want to have to install a cam twice. It is doable in one day (mine took about 10-12hours from start to stop) Do it right once and be done with it.
I run a new stock chain and dampener
    Comp Cams 76-802-9 cam
105 Crow Cams springs, intense retainers, ZZP's Viton seals
    Idle bumped up 100rpms
Overall, I'm extremely happy with it. If I were to do it again, I'd go with an S3x, double roller, and 150lb springs with milled guides.

    ^

You want to match it to your car/mods and driving style.

No need to get a radical cam with .600 lift if you're on stock heads and want to get 30mpg kind of thing.

Lets be honest if your thinking about camming you probly just want to go faster.

The question is what are your future plans? Are you throwing in this cam and stopping there or do you plan on moving to bigger and badder things?

    Vs cam here

Very streetable I still maintain good mpg. The powerband is perfect for around town driving. The XP is great but like you said look at the powerband and decide what kind of driving you normally do. Look on YouTube.. Listen to a few different cam set ups and decide if you can deal with that on a daily basis or not. I enjoy big cams as much as the next guy but for a DD no thank you.
Squirrels are my engine. I need a Ford Regal

None of the cams being discussed here are big.
    They're all streetable.

If a car was on an XP cam and was sluggish around town, there was something wrong with that car.
Danomite is selling an Intense S2 cam, very very similar to the XP.

I like my 76-802-9 and it makes decent power but it is a little smaller than a XP, makes less power but it still gets pretty bad mpg (15-20 on E85, 19-24 on 93). And it still breaks the timing chain damper once a year. Another thing to look at though is no matter what cam you get your only going to make low, MAYBE mid 300's on stock heads. Size your setup accordingly, if your running stock heads a big cam is just more bs for no reason.

Hey, I still get 22-24 in town, and 28-30mpg on the highways with mine.

I've got a VS cam. I love it. Perfect for a DD IMO. When everyone calls it a "mild" cam, which it is, people get the idea that it doesn't do much. This is incorrect. VS does wake up your motor quite a bit. Good smooth power increase across almost the entire gear. I'm a fan. Not the cam for a "track only" or "weekend warrior", but for streetable DD, it's great.
