    170k miles, 1998 GTP

I keep getting the code. It's an EGR pintle position closed error. I've replaced EGR, cleaned it, tried the trick on OBDII.com (clearing etc) and it still randomly pops up (along with some random engine sputtering at higher RPM).

I'm pretty sure this is a symptom and not the problem (eg P1404 is manifested of other problems and not a 'problem' in and of itself).

It's not a clogged cat, not an O2 problem, the problem is NOT persistent so I don't think it'a a PCM problem (I've read it needs to be reflashed to alleviate persistent P1404), plugs are gapped/clean, FPR is OEM but seems to work fine, new fuel filter (just in case), I've diagnosed the EGR (http://easyautodiagnostics.com/gm_eg...gr_valve_1.php) and not found issues with the PCM or EGR.

This seems to be worse when it's cold, but I don't know how profound of a statement that is since it's winter (and it's pretty much always relatively cold outside).

Any ideas? I'm wondering if crappy winter fuel blends are to blame...

Have you checked for vac leaks? A bad map sensor or vac leak can cause EGR codes

I've checked for vac leaks using carb cleaner. I could not find any.

My next step is to look at fuel trim levels and see if I can find anything useful.
