What cam to get...

Ok guys. I have read quite a bit on cams but i'm gonna ask this anyways. Even though Im gonna get alot of different opinions.

Here is what I have bought so far:
104s
Taylor wires
180 drilled TS
Oversized ZZP radiator
Plog
Rear ported manifold
MPS 3.4 and 3.2 pullies
Lucas 42# injectors
105# springs
ZZP 3" downpipe
New standard timing chain and tensioner
New water pump

I do plan on getting a ZZP I/C in a month or two. And I do not plan on doing any head work for quite a while if ever.

So my question is what would be the best cam for me to order? And are the pulleis the right sizes? Keep in mind I am in CA so it will have to pass smog (CA sucks like that).

VS or XP would be good for your set up.... buuuut in your sig it says you want to use 1.9 rockers with the cam? Not going to happen, thats way to much lift.

Also just noticed it says 130# springs too... thats gona require head work too

S1X can be used with the rockers and comes out to a bit more lift than a stage 3 cam iirc will still need head work.

Opps - I fixed sig. Sold the rockers and changed to 105# springs.

VS, XP, S1x, all will work fine on stock heads.

Yeah I know. That was just for somebody with any insite...

Will I be ok with the standard timing chain? I read alot about double roller needed and not needed. The cam is the last item i need to get this motor back together. I hope I'm on the right track with what I bought to make some good HP! Its costing me enough!!

using a stock timing chain and dampener i'd change it every 50k miles when running a non-stock cam, but it will work just fine. i've never seen one break that didn't get destroyed by the dampener taking it out.

You'll be fine running the stock chain/dampener on a VS/S1X/XP or similar cam. Like Bio said, you'd probably want to replace it every 50k or so miles.
You can also bump the idle up a bit to make it easier on the chain/dampener.

As far as the smog testing, you'd have to talk to a Cali person.

You'll get similar results with all of the above mentioned cams, kind of down to personal choice and pricing. Though quite a few people have put the VS in only to upgrade to an XP or larger cam. I personally like my Comp Cams 76-802-9 and have no complaints with it at all. Check around for any demods to see if you can get a good price on a used cam.

Oh yeah - I been looking daily with no success. I look for a few more days then I'll just buy a new one.

Since the timing chain isnt much an issue, im leaning towards XP or S1X.

What about thrasher? They are on sale right now...

While that site is still up, I don't believe you can purchase anything from them, as they go through their ebay store which hasn't been active in quite some time (Still has a notice at the top about being on vacation back in 09)

First of where in cali are you located? I know of a couple modified gps here including myself running a VS cam setup. Depending on the cam you got with will depend on springs and chain. i stayed with a single new of course and running #90 springs. personally if you run the 105s go with a double to be on the safe side and not have to change it out as often as a single. Had a guy running xp and 105's and a single chain he almost trashed his engine. his transmission went out took apart the block to look at the chain and the dampner was literally about to come off. he had 10k on that setup. better to be safe imo. if i were you sell the manifolds and dp combo and go headers.

Single chain is fine on 105#s. LOTS of people do it with no issues.

Thats why i said imo, his build his choice, but i prefer to play it safer on that part.

I understand. Just all the work for a double roller seems overkill to me.

understandable, but it isnt throwing money away when you consider cost, labor, time and all that to replace the stock chain. I personally prefer to do it one time and enjoy the car without worries.
